Windows Vista Beta 2

I'm wondering if anyone here has tried the new Windows Vista Beta 2. I was curious, so I took Microsoft up on its offer to send a disk for $10 ($14 by the time they shipped it! ) I have an older laptop with a 2 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, etc. that I'm not using much, so I thought I might try that. I notice on the notes that accompany the disk (a DVD, by the way) that the install can take up to 4 hours to complete......! . Maybe that's just because this is a beta, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried the Beta 2 and how the install went. I'll probably not get around to trying it until the weekend. Too much to do on the weekdays...and I don't want to be up half the night watching a s-l-o-w install.

Thanks for any thoughts. I will post what i find out, when I do the install, but would be interested in what others may have found.

I don't have Vista Beta 2 as right now I don't have a PC available to play with. However, I have read that slow install times are common right now and are being worked on. You may want to read Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: What to Expect from Windows Vista Beta 2 for more information about the release in general.

    Hi Joe,

I hadn't read that article by Paul. He lays it right out there. Nevertheless, I think I'll give it a try. I know that the video card in this spare PC will not support Aero, but I'm not using the PC anyway.

Thank you for directing me to Paul's article. I appreciate it!

I have installed it several times on a laptop with 1 gig of ram. It takes about 40 minutes to do a Clean install and about 1 hour to do a update. That said, I do NOT have a lot a programs on the laptop, but if you do, that is what will take so long.

Also, remove ALL firewalls, AV programs and any disk utils as they will NOT work with Vista.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Windows Vista Beta 2

I installed it on one of the office laptops to test it with our applications. I did the install as an upgrade over an existing installation of XP. I also had Office 2003 and several other applications on the laptop. I want to say it took about 3 hours. I sat it next to me at my desk so I could keep track of the install while continuing to work on my computer. It's a Dell Inspiron running Celeron 2.6GHz and 512MB RAM. I recommend running the MS Vista compatibility checking program before doing the install. I'll be installing it at home next so I can continue to test apps outside work. We're planning to do a replacement of half our desktops next year and I'm anxious to stay on top and be ready for it.
