Windows Defender Beta 2

I have Windows Defender installed on 3 machines and no problem. Now I have this one machine where I can't get it to install. It says it is installed then when I try to run it I get an error message that says, "The application has failed to start because MSVCR80.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem." Re-installing does not fix the problem. I also searched the Internet for help with the MSVCR80.dll error and found nothing useful for Windows Defender. I did see a note that said to go to a privatenews.microsoft.com but I can't get there. Does anyone know how I can fix the above error and get Windows Defender installed?

Thanks.

Re: Windows Defender Beta 2

I don't know anything about Defender or the DLL in question, but just for the heck of it, I searched my drive for the file and found it here:

C:WINDOWSWinSxSx86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e1 8e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_0de06acd (Whew! That's some directory name; I wouldn't want to have to type it!)

How about checking all your machines to see where the file resides? Maybe the one you're having trouble with just accidently has the file in an incorrect location.

Bid Al,

I already did that before I posted and I found it in the same directory as you did even on the machine where it won't install.

Strange,

I found it at that same location and ALSO found it at :

(xxxxx_Same numbers)_8.0.50215_4674_x-ww_b7b0ad54.

I don't use Defender either.

Bob,

Sorry but I don't follow where else you found it unless you're saying the same address as Al listed with the added end numbers you listed.

From what I could find when Googling for MSVCR80.dll. I believe it must be used in quite a few other programs as well as Windows Defender.

hlewton,
Yes, it's the same numbers that AL had mentioned plus the second instance had the same BEGINNING location as that but after the 8.0, it had the new numbers that I mentioned in the first post.
I don't know if I'm making sense here?

I was just trying to avoid typing in all those numbers again.
There were two separate and distinct entries found in the search.

Bob,

Yeah I thought that was what you meant.

I have the file that Al found I just think that for some reason Windows Defender can't find it and I have no idea how to direct it to the MSVCR80.dll file.

Download and put this copy of MSVCR80.DLL in your WIndowsSystem32 folder.

It worked for me with another application that couldn't find the DLL. ( don't remember which one but it wasn't Defender )

MSVCR80.DLL

Re: Windows Defender Beta 2

I saw your and Bob's replies during the evening, but as I was in several phone discussions, there was no time to reply.

Not so much a solution, but my observations. This is a coincidence; some days ago, I installed a new mouse with its software (Logitech SetPoint). During the install, I saw a brief flash mention Microsoft Visual C++ 2005. Later as I looked at the System Restore I found no RP for the Logitech SetPoint software, but I found a RP for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable. I could not then understand why I needed this, but then some programs do need their own runtime files. Ah, well everything worked OK.

I did a search for changed files / folders and found in the C:WindowsWinSxS folder 5 folders, type x86_Microsoft.VC80.XXX, all created at my install time.

x86_Microsoft.VC80.ATL_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727. 42_x-ww_6e805841
x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727. 42_x-ww_0de06acd
x86_Microsoft.VC80.MFC_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727. 42_x-ww_dec6ddd2
x86_Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.507 27.42_x-ww_3415f6d0
x86_Microsoft.VC80.OpenMP_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.507 27.42_x-ww_0ee63867

As you already know by now, one of them contains MSVCR80.dll. So if this is one file among others in the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable" runtime files for different applications; maybe you should download that redistributable file and install it. I don't know if it will help but the file is distributed in this package.

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)

Re: Windows Defender Beta 2

Argus,

With a little memory jog ( mine not the computer ) I recalled that when I installed .net framework 2.0 it seemed to go fine but then Norton Utilities started to complain that there was a problem with .net in that it couldn't find MSVCR80.dll.
I DL the file as suggested, put it in the System32 folder and the complaining stopped and all was well.
Maybe, once in a while it does work OK to just replace a missing file. Since .Net found it, registering was not necessary?
As I said, It did work for me. " Wonders of Electronics"!

Try again reinstalling it, after uninstalling using Microsoft's free "Windows Install Clean Up" utility.

Teunis,

I'll answer the easy post first. I had already done that before I started this thread.

Thanks.
