Cells overwriting adjacent cells (Excel 2000 SP3)

In general I want the content of cells (the content being mostly text) to spill over into the adjacent cell, if the content is too long for the cell it has been entered in (and assuming the adjacent cell is blank!).

But this doesn' t always happen!

I have a date in a custom format (the oft-lamented dd/mm/yy so beloved of the British!!), but this just appears as a row of hashes if my column is too narrow, whereas text in cells above and below spills over.

Is there a way to make my date behave the same?

    Thanks

    Neil

The spillover only occurs for cells containing text, never for cells containing numbers or dates. You'll have to make the column wide enough for the date.

    Thank you Hans.

I'll stop wondering now I know the limitation.

    Cheers
