    Mouse / Pointer - Frozen? (XP (SP2))

    Hi,

I am using a laptop with a Synaptics Pointing Device instead of a mouse. Yesterday after booting up, I could not get my pointer to move at all. The problem was that I could not move over to the start menu to restart so all I could do was to switch off my laptop at the mains. I have heard that you should not do this but I didn't know wht else to do.

Is there any way to shut down safely using just the keyboard? And is there any way to control the pointer using the keyboard?

You can press Ctrl+Esc to activate the Start menu, then use the arrow keys and Enter to select a menu option, such as Shut Down.

Hitting the "Windows" key will also bring up the start menu.

Didn't it switch to battery, or did you remove that as well?

Otherwise, Cntrl+Alt+Del should bring up a Shutdown option.

    Thank You

Thanks for the advice guys. I have taken the battery out and my laptop is connected to the mains permanently. I didn't know about the Ctrl + Escape tip so thanks for that.
