    How to: Learn about Software

I'm looking for a book about learning software. I mean a generic book, not about a specific software package, but a book about the process of learning.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi,

Have you tried Bruce Eckel's series Thinking About ...? Try this link http://www.mindview.net/Books

He is about using languages (Java, C++ etc) but the intorductory stuff is very good

    Catharine,

I am not sure exactly what you are looking for, but here are a few links to consider. The first two are general programming links with other references. For G&G's (aka Grins and Giggles), I did a Google search for "teach programming" and found numerous references - but usually tied to a specific language.

If you are looking for programming techniques, I recommend using an Object Oriented Programming (OOP) Language like ADA.

ADA is a high order programming language which is easy to understand, close to English is "Programming" and readily available (open source compilers are available).

I included two ADA Links which are fairly good. I really like the second one "Ada Resource Assoc.'s Ada Information Clearinghouse Home Page". This for ADA 2005. Once you understand structured programming and programming in ADA, other languages are easier to understand - especially if they are also OOP's as well (ex VBS, C++, Java, etc).

    Hope this helps !!!

If you are coming at it from the empirical perspective of how average users actually learn software -- "how do" rather than "how to" -- then HCI books might be helpful. Try this for more thoughts: HCI Bibliography : Human-Computer Interaction / User Interface Usability.

Jeff has picked up a good resource there but I was just looking through my work shelves and we have a pretty good book Called:

    Human-Computer Interaction by Alan Dix/janet Finlay/Gregory Abowd/Russell Beale

    ISBN: 0-13-239864-8

It is pretty comprehensive and one of developers here swears by it so hopefully that is an avenue, also this link gives a list of UID Literature ..Good Luck

This might be relevant at a peripheral level, but an interesting article all the same:
How People Learn (and What Technology Might Have To Do with It). ERIC Digest.
