    Do I need multiple firewalls

I searched on firewall and multiple but didn't find a thread about this.

I am curious to know if I need to run a software firewall at all, if I am connecting to the net (SBC DSL) using a router between the DSL modem and my PC. I plug directly into the router from my desktop PC and connect wirelessly from my Laptop. I have a Linksys WRT54Gs wireless rig with the firewall turned on. I also run Windows XP SP2 Firewall. Is this overkill? or is it a good practice to double the buffer zone by using multiple firewalls.

And If I need a software firewall, what is a good choice, freeware would be best of course if there is a decent free firewall out there that won't conflict with my router and home wireless network.

The short answer: you can run a software firewall in combination with a hardware firewall in your DSL modem/router, but you should never run two software firewalls simultaneously. For more info, see Jefferson Scher's Software Firewall: Why use it, Where to get it.

    Thom,
A good software firewall is recommended in addition to the hardware firewall provided by the router.
Two software firewalls are not recommended and the MS firewall does not seem to carry much favor here in the Lounge because it only provides incoming protection not outgoing.

A good software <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> firewall is ZOne Alarm and you can download it here: ZONEALARM click the download box at the far right for the free version.

Re: Do I need multiple firewalls

Following on from the foregoing messages, if you have more than one PC behind your hardware firewall you need to make sure that the software firewall on each PC/laptop allows machines on your local network to see each other, if you want to do file and/or printer sharing between the machines. How to do this varies between software firewalls, but if you use ZoneAlarm, on each machine go to Firewall -> Zones and Add your local network (say 192.168.0.0 / 255.255.255.0) into the Trusted Zone.
