Do I Need This? (Pro SP2+)

Many moons ago I decided to upgrade from Win98SE to XP Pro. As kind of a safety net, I chose to install XP in a folder called WINXP, instead of letting the install go to WINDOWS. I've subsequently upgraded practically all the hardware involved, and now have an Antec case with an Asus mobo. When I first went to the Antec case a year ago, I had an MSI mobo. Couple months ago the PC got squirrelly, and after several weeks back and forth to the repair shop, finally determined I had a flaky mobo and power supply (hence the Asus mobo I know have).

During the "diagnosis" of my problem, the repair shop had me wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall XP. Once I got the new mobo and power supply installed, I used my latest backup (on an external USB hard drive) to Restore my PC. Worked pretty well, and I've managed to deal with the few problems I had doing the Restore. I've now switched to nightly incremental backups, and would like to make them execute as quickly as possible. Is there any reason I can't remove the old WINDOWS folder? I checked BOOT.INI, and it only refers to the WINXP folder. Or might I still have some software that requires entries from the WINDOWS folder?

Try renaming it and see if that causes any problems. If nothing bad happens in a couple weeks, I'd say it was safe to delete it. I'm curious where all the patch removal folders are going though. Are all the updates and patches that you have downloaded since the new mobo install in the Windows or the WinXP folder. I'd suspect that they along with all the other things that are supposed to be in the Windows folder are in the WinXP folder. Yes ???

In a Command Prompt window type SET, and check what paths appear for the environment variables:

Comspec
Path
SystemRoot
WinDir[/list]If they are all pointing to C:WINXP rather than C:WINDOWS, then there's a fair bet that you can delete C:WINDOWS. But best to rename it first, as has been suggested !

    John,

The only place I saw any reference to the WINDOWS directory was in the PATH, but as the last two entries. The first entry in PATH is C:WINXPSYSTEM32. I renamed WINDOWS to WINOLD several days ago, and haven't seen any problems.
