    Undeliverable to Ghost Exchange Mailbox (2003)

    We deleted a former employee's Exchange mailbox.
    That employee had permission to see her boss' calendar.

    We cannot find any trace of the deleted employee either on the Exchange server or on her boss' calendar or delegate permissions. But now, every time anyone responds to an invitation sent from "the boss", the responder gets an "Undeliverable to the ghost employee's name" message from the System Administrator.

    Here is the actual message:
    Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

    Subject: Accepted: Test to find lynn ghost ssb
    Sent: 6/30/2006 2:21 PM

    The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

    "name of deleted user " on 6/30/2006 2:21 PM
    The e-mail account does not exist at the organization this message was sent to. Check the e-mail address, or contact the recipient directly to find out the correct address.

    I'd appreciate any suggestions.

    Have you looked in the boss's rules (Tools | Rules Wizard)?

    Just checked the boss' rules. He only has one and it is to forward specific messages to his home e-mail address.

    I don't use invitations much, but do they have "reply to" fields like ordinary messages (in messages, you can set/see them under View>Options)? If so, I wonder whether the template somehow incorporates the old address so that new appointments still include it.

    I am looking at the send options under Advanced which is a button on my screen when I choose "edit response before sending" to accept the boss's invitation.
    When I highlight his name and select Send Options under the Advanced button, I get the message "this recepient has no options specified".

    If I select properties under the Advanced button, the only data I see is the distribution groups the boss belongs to.

    Perhaps ghost permissions are still on the Server. See if it helps to close the bosses Outlook client and restart it from the Start | Run box using the /cleanfreebusy, /cleanreminders, /cleanserverrules and /cleanprofile switches. If not you might try recreating the bosses email profile under Control Panel | Mail.

    Has the mail store on the Server been compacted since the employee left? If not, try that - to see if the "ghost" disappears. HTH

    Problem solved by our IT guru. I don't understand the details but he said the undeliverable message showed account numbers which belonged to the former employee. So he re-established the former employee's exchange mailbox, which set up using the same account numbers. This put the former employee back on the boss' calendar delegate list. He then took her off the boss' delegate tab and once again deleted her mailbox.

    He said the problem was caused by a bug in Microsoft's Windows Server software.

    Hope this makes sense to some of you. Thanks for the valiant efforts to help.
