    Symbol search (Word 2000)

Word's search/replace function finds Greek letters typed in the Basic Greek subset of standard fonts like Arial and TNR, but it doesn't find Greek letters typed in the Symbol font, even if the Symbol font is specified in the search dialogue. They don't even appear as Greek letters in the search dialogue but as Roman equivalents; e.g., a pasted-in [alpha] appears as an "a". Why is this, and is there a way of getting Word to find and replace such characters?

Microsoft has a template available for download that contains a macro for finding and replacing symbols: Word 2000 Supplemental Macros.

Note: in Word 2003, it is possible to search for Greek characters from the Symbol font, even though they are not displayed correctly in the Find/Replace dialog.

You can find them with their code, which you can get from the Insert > Symbol dialog, Shortcut key... > Description.
Say you see there "Symbol: 61537" (for the small alpha), you can use ^u61537 in "Find what".

You could also calculate the code... The alpha is typed with the small "a" which has code 97. Then add 61440.
Word uses a Unicode "private corporate use" block starting at U+F000 (= 61440) for symbol fonts.

If you have the code, you could also use Alt+61537 in the dialog to create the character there. Word will show the Wingdings font though (same in newer versions).
