Conflict managing a dupl. primary key in replica (Access XP)

    Hi,

How does Access manage a scenario where an autonumber ID number + record is entered into the master and the same autonumber ID and a different record is entered into a replica. Then when the sync process is started it merges the data into one record where it should actually be two seperate records. This is a common problem when records are added in the replica on the road and when back at the office (where records have been added to the master) conflict with same autonumbers?

    Anyone have the same issues?
    Regards,
    Rudi

    From the online help:

When you replicate a database, any incremental AutoNumber fields in your tables change to random numbering. All AutoNumber fields in existing records retain their values, but AutoNumber values for inserted records are random. In other words, the record numbers don't reflect the order in which the records were inserted and, consequently, the record inserted last doesn't necessarily have the highest value.

With random numbering, the probability of having the same AutoNumber in different replicas is very small. If you want to exclude the possibility, change the Field Size from Long Integer to Replication ID. A Replication ID (GUID) is a 128 bit number (whereas a Long Integer is 32 bits) that is guaranteed to be unique.

Thx Hans. this is clearer now. Tx for your tip about Replication ID field size too...that will be useful!

    Hans,

Thanks for the post, I have to start to work with replicated Access databases from another organization. In a meeting last week we were discussing this problem and did not have a good solution for resolving possible duplicates in auto number fields.
