    Prime symbol (Word 2000)

Which of the symbols in the attachment is the correct character to use for a prime symbol (as in DNA sequences)?

The second one - Unicode character 2032 (hex) - is the "official" prime character. The first one is the acute accent (as used in French, Spanish etc.)

Is there a simple method for entering this and other Unicode symbols (like "Alt + 0180" for the acute accent's ASCII code)? A macro works in text but not in the find/replace dialogue.

Does the following work in Word 2000?
    - Turn on Num Lock.
    - In the document or in the Find/Replace dialog, press Alt+8242 using the numeric keypad for the digits.
(8242 is the decimal equivalent of hexadecimal 2032)

Note: in Word 2002 and 2003, you can type the hexadecimal number (2032 for the prime symbol) then press Alt+X to convert it to the corresponding Unicode character.

    No, Alt+8242 produces "2".

Did you turn on Num Lock? If so, I don't know how to do it in Word 2000 (I use 2002 and 2003), except of course the Insert | Symbol dialog. Perhaps someone with Word 2000 knows.

    Re: Prime symbol (Word 2000)

I get the desired character in Word 2002 -- and a 2 in Firefox textbox or textarea (such as this editing area), both on Windows XP Pro SP2. I wonder whether something changed between Word 2000 and Word 2002 with respect to Unicode characters and the Alt key?
