    Restore ONE mailbox from Exchange

    Good afternoon,

Can anybody tell me if it's possible to restore ONE mailbox from the Exchange server without restoring everybody elses mail?

    Many thanks in advance!

    Daphne

Which version of Exchange are you using?

Depends on the backup was accomplished. In general, the answer is No. You must set up a disataster recovery server with a similar exchange setup, restore the priv.edb database file to that server, start it up and extract the information from that instance of exchange. This procedure is covered in the "Disaster Recoery Guide" which you should be following if you are responsible for an Exchange server.

However, if you have specal backup software that enables you to do what is usually called a "brick-level backup" you can backup and restore individual mailboxes. This sort of thing is not considered a best practise for exchange. It presents serveral problems (uses miles of tape, takes a long time, breaks "single instance storage").

    Good morning,

Thanks again for your speedy answers. I hoped there was a simpler method, but unfortunately there's none... bummer for me (well, not for me, but for our customer :-p)

    Have a nice day!

Well, it's a procedure that you really ought to know (and practice!). Tell your client that a little bit of pain while you go through the D&R setup will pay everyone back in case there is a real disaster, and the entire store needs to be recovered.

If your client has the funds to invest in a "brick-level" backup and restore product, here's one my IT people recommended: Sonasoft - Automated Point-Click Recovery.

I couldn't find ifyou mentioned your particular Exchange version, but, if you search at Microsoft for "excange disaster recovery" you should be able to find the DR whitepaper and other good information on doing this operation.

    Good luck.
