    Broadband speed testing

Now that I have upgraded my DSL connection to 3MB/528KB for only $17.99/month form AT&T/SBC, I wanted to test the connection. Here is a good speed test site:

His highlight advertising point is that he achieves greater accuracy by not using javascript as most online test sites do. Since you've already installed it, would you mind doing a comparison test on this site (broadband Speed tests) to see how they fare? I'm not sure what his advanced features are besides exporting and emailing, but certainly $15 to register is not an unfair price, although a rarely used application.

There is also a broadband test at my favorite ISP that starts with a V. You don't have to be a V subscriber either.

    Re: Broadband speed testing

As you might imagine, I couldn't stand it to see if Bill would answer, so I went ahead and installed his recommended program. Using the online test at my link my cable checked out at 3,685 bits download, the Verizon link says 3,764 bits and Bill's program reports download from east coast USA servers at 3,431 bits. I have no idea which one, if any, is "most" accurate, but it's all in the ball-park enough for me. Unfortunately Bill's program won't measure uploads or store reports unless you pay.

It's free to use unless you want to test upload speed. Here are the results I just got:

Thanks for the comparison, Bill. We'll never know if his program is more efficient or not, but it nice to know he's there. Your result seems to follow the pattern I saw.

    Re: Broadband speed testing

There are 3 that I have used over the years:

    1. http://testmy.net
    2. http://speakeasy.net/speedtest
    3. http://toast.net

EDIT: I downloaded and installed that Dan Elwell's Broadband Speedtest and it is useless on my system due to the fact that I use <IMG SRC=http://www.the-highway.com/Smileys/satellite.gif>. I suspect that the latency factor is the culprit which caused all the ping tests to timeout. But the download speeds were quite accurate.

    Re: Broadband speed testing

    Hi All,

Approxiamtely 3 years ago, I was searching for prices on T1 lines for a customer. I came across T1 Shopper Broadband Test Sites.

This site lists numerous US Broadband and International Test sites by Sate/Country. New sites are added all the time and if you know of sites for International Countries, they appreciate a link.

You can decide for yourself which one's work best for you.
    Scott
