Count (Excel 2000)

Entered in a cell in Excel I have the follow information
'A31 C58 F41 F45 F46 F63 G07 G08 J12 L01 L54 S04
Each code (i.e. A31) shown above represents an entry. Therefore, this cell shows 12 entries. Is there a formula that can work this out for me?
Thanks very much, H-P

Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

Say that the information is in cell A1. The following formula in another cell will count the number of codes:

=LEN(A1)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A1," ",""))+1

This formula counts the number of spaces and adds 1. It assumes that each space is a separator - no spaces within codes, and no multiple spaces.
