Control Panel not responding (Home Edition SP1)

It seems I have a damaged .cpl file, because the Control Panel has stopped working. Will someone please point me to a location where I can install a new one. If I get a new one, should I remove the current one first?

Gloria,
This is a system file. You can go to start>run and type sfc scannow.
It will start to scan your system and will ask you for your XP CD to copy missing or corrupt system files.
Be patient, it usually takes a while.

Thanks Bob, but I did that while I was waiting to hear from someone on the lounge. It didn't fix my Control Panel.

Have you done an A/V Scan? How about a spyware scan? Have you tried running individual .cpl files in %windir%system32? Do you get an error message? Have a look at the some of the links on xp control panel missing - Google Search.

go to :CPL FIX

One of the hits in Joe's suggested search is Kelly's Korner, a popular site for tweaks and fixes. I suggest you try Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP and look at #256 in her tweaks list.

You bet I have and run it every other day. I use Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2006, Microsoft AntiSpyware, Spyware Blaster, Ad-Aware SE Pro, and Search & Destroy. There I run once-a-week. I can assure you that I'm not infected with Mailwae, Viruses or Spyware.

I visited the site you mentioned and did what it suggested. Sad to say but nothings changed. Thank you for the suggestion.

Thanks Viking, that did the trick, I now have my Control Panel back.

I knew someone was going to mention SP2 before I was through with this thread. I've almost reached the point where I'm willing to put my computer at risk and install it. Expect a flood of I can't see this and I can't do that, after I do. So get ready.

Thanks Big Al, you always are Johnny on the spot when I call. As I explained in a previous post to Viking, his tip fixed my Control Panel and I have it back again. I will save your suggestion and add the .reg file to my collection of tips that work, in case it goes away again.

When you do finally decide to install SP-2 just be sure to do a complete backup before you start. Check out the links at Windows XP Service Pack 2 for more information on a successful update.

Oh my!!!! He's gone and scared me out of my (you know what). And just when I almost worked up courage to install. Is it so likely to cause problems that I have to do a backup? I've just lost what courage I had. Good-bye SP2.

Back ups are normal for a major change ( for the better ). Do you have any insurance, life, house, car, boat for example? Back ups are the same thing.

Here I thought I had you convinced to take the plunge ( poor choice of words ) and the mention of making a back up scares you out of it?

Yep, I have insurance, but I didn't have to write it, all I did was sign on the dotted line. Why do you consider "taking the plunge" a poor choice of words? I thought it was very discriptive (like falling down a deep well and drowning).

"What are we going to do with you?" I really don't know, perhaps teaching me what to back up and where. I tried it once, putting most of my computer information on a CD, needless to say it was a disaster. I have a second hard drive, but it's not realistic to put it there. If the computer won't start, the information is unusable. To go through all that trouble just to install an update isn't worth it as far as I'm concerned.
