Word saves changed doc w/o prompt (2003/SP2)

    Situation:
I have a document that I make changes to. Then I change my mind and decide I don't really want to save the changes I just made, so I want to close the document without saving.
However, Word doesn't give the usual dialog box asking me if I want to save or not. It just closes the document saving all the changes I had made.

The only way I can get back to Word prompting me again, is to reboot my PC. Please note that none of the other Office 2003 applications act this way.

There may be code (for example in an add-in) that messes with the normal "Do you want to save changes" prompt. Check out Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post> to see if you can find the culprit.

Check to see if "Allow background saves" is checked in "Tools, Options, and then the 'Save' tab"?

Yes, that is checked. However, that has always been checked and Word still always, upon close of the document, asked if I wanted to save changes if I had not specifically already clicked Save.

It should ask ONLY if changes were made since the last backgorund save.

Maybe this feature has changed, but historically I think Background Save meant that Word would let you start working again very soon after you tell Word to save, rather than displaying the hourglass until it had finished all of the stuff it does. Like Background Print. I turn them both off out of paranoia that I will do something to lock up the application while Word is trying to do two things at once. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Further clarification on this "situation"
I can open an existing document, delete one word, close the document without clicking Save. And Word SAVES the document with this change. This is all done within one minute's time. The document is not opened long enough for the "background save" to happen.

I agree with Hans that there must be some customization that is causing this. Word does not do this unless it is customized. Phil's post (linked above) should help you find it.

Okay...thru some tests...I found that Word starts "acting up" after I do a Mail Merge from Act!
So, I'm off to an Act forum to see what they say!

Thanks for all the tips from everyone!

"Background Save meant that Word would let you start working again very soon after you tell Word to save" is this what is called "FAST SAVE"?

Re: Word saves changed doc w/o prompt (2003/SP2)

"Allow fast saves" means that when you save, Word doesn't write the entire document to disk, but only appends a log of changes since the previous save. When you reopen the document, Word reconstructs the current version by loading the last saved complete version and successively applying the change logs. This can easily cause the document to become corrupted, so everyone recommends turning it off. but it shouldn't have anything to do with whether Word prompts you to save changes.
