    OLE crashing (XP Pro SP2)

My dad's laptop is crashing OLE several times a day.

Below is what he told me is the report on the crash.

    Error signature:
    AppName msimn. exe
    ModVer. 5.1.2600.2180
    AppVer. 6.0.2900.2180
    Offset: .0064 ed1
    ModName: ntdll.dll

Is there a way to "repair" or reinstall OLE?

Msimn.exe is Outlook Express (I don't know if that is what you neant by OLE). See MSKB article How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP.

Sorry to get back with you so late about this. He's been struggling along with Outlook Express crashing several times each day.

It looks like what they are suggesting is to run the sfc /scannow utility. How does that work? If he has XP SP2, but the only install CD I have is the original XP version is it going to ask me for a different CD?

I think sfc is clever enough to take service packs into account, but I'm not 100% certain. Perhaps one of our Windows experts will have an authoritative answer.

SFC should take the service pack into account and select the newest file.

SFC ran without a hitch. Although, I don't think it found anything. Will it give a report or just quit? It took about 30 mins. to run.
OLE is still having trouble. I may need to re-install XP. It's been about 4 years.

Re: OLE crashing (XP Pro SP2)

I thought that SFC would ask you if you wanted to replace anything it found but It has been so long since I've used SFC I don't remember for sure.

FYI, most people refer to Outlook Express as OE as OLE is a term for another software technology. Here's the deifnition for OLE from http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/O/OLE.html:

Abbreviation of Object Linking and Embedding, pronounced as separate letters or as oh-leh. OLE is a compound document standard developed by Microsoft Corporation. It enables you to create objects with one application and then link or embed them in a second application. Embedded objects retain their original format and links to the application that created them.
Support for OLE is built into the Windows and Macintosh operating systems. A competing compound document standard developed jointly by IBM, Apple Computer, and other computer firms is called OpenDoc.

Now, you'll not be able to do a repair installation of XP unless you slipstream SP-2 with your original software. Here's a link Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: Slipstreaming Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) to do that. There are many others if you search the internet. I'd recommend that you create a slipstreamed CD. If you ever need to re-install again you'll already have it.

Thanks. I had forgotten that OLE is used for "Object Linking and Embedding".

I had started the slipstream before and never finished. I'll have to do that.

Actually, the plan is to partition the drive, then format C, then totally reload XP on that partition.

Sounds like a good plan. Just be sure that you back up any data first.
