    Pie Chart (2003)

I've been given a presentation to improve on. It contains an exploded pie chart. Is there a way of animating each individual piece of the pie chart?

    Select the chart.
Activate the Custom Animation task pane (Slide Show | Custom Animation).
Select an animation, for example Appear.
The selected animation will appear in the list.
Click the dropdown arrow next to the name of the animation.
Select Effect Options from the dropdown list.
    Activate the Chart Animation tab.
Select the way you want the elements to appear (by Category).
    Click OK.

Did you select the chart before specifying an animation?
If you did, how has the chart been created. If it is a "real" chart, there should be a chart animation tab. However, if it has been pasted into PowerPoint as a picture, you cannot get at its individual elements, so there will be no chart animation tab.

If I double click on the chart, it opens up for me to edit.

Could you attach a copy of the presentation, containing only the slide with the pie chart (zipped if necessary)?

You had embedded an Excel workbook in the slide. For chart animation to work, you must either create a chart in PowerPoint, or copy and paste an Excel chart into PowerPoint. In the attached presentation, the first slide contains a chart created in PowerPoint, the second slide a chart from Excel.

Thanks Hans, that's great. Thought it wasn't working at first, but I've discovered that Fade animation can't be done by category, (won't work on mine anyway). As soon as I changed the type of animation, it let me choose 'by Category'. Thanks again.

Some types of animation, in particular the more complicated ones, can only be applied to the object as a whole, but Fade should work for a pie chart. See attached demo.
