ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt (Home/SP2)

Hi,
This morning I have had some really bad problems with the XP machine. First boot: machine froze at desktop, rebooted it and it worked perfectly, worked at the machine for some hour, surfing the net etc. Closed my Internet connection and thought I could check out some old game I had installed (the game is not the problem), and the machine froze.

Rebooted it again, and it froze. Booted to Safe Mode (that worked; but I don't think the fault are drivers just because Safe Mode worked, more the intermitent nature of the hardware failure, whatever). I right-clicked the C drive and checked both boxes for Chkdsk to set a control/scan, then restarted the machine.

The C check took ~14 minutes (probably found some minor index not used) the drive came out OK. Rebooted and it froze at desktop, rebooted it again and now it told me a chkdsk scan was scheduled (?). OK do it, but it froze at 7 sec. countdown. I rebooted to start in Safe Mode and got the following error:

"multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWSsystem3 2ntoskrnl.exe

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
system32ntoskrnl.exe.

Please reinstall a copy of the above file."

Rebooted with the slipstreamed XP SP2 CD to the Recovery console. My ntoskrnl.exe is dated 05/03/02 20:09 and that seems OK since I know that there was some update in march -05. However, I got bored looking around the Windows dir. to find the .cab files. (MS have really crippled the dir command et al in the RC! I did know this before, but it does not help when you are at stress ...) If the ntoskrnl.exe file is not corrupt it seems NOT like a good idea to expand and copy an older version from the XP SP2 CD, or?

I have now started up another old PC to do some quick checks around the Net. A first check at experts-exchange (that is no expert at all) talks about everything from virus to HDD failure etc. Then some guy says he used RC and loged on to WINDOWS, rebooted and everything works, jeez. Sigh. I at least know so much that it doesn't help only to log in with RC and do nothing.

I did not try to boot the machine again without the XP CD to see it was some temp. error. At the moment I can think of the following:
- corrupt boot.ini. Either Default value in boot loader or damaged path info
- damaged ntoskrnl.exe (it certainly is not missing)
- ? HDD, etc.

I will take a look at the boot.ini, there are both the manual edit option (if I only remember the correct values to put there) and the /rebuild command. Also when I am at the RC I can run another chkdsk /r.

Any thoughts what might have caused this and how to solve is appreciated.

Thanks.

Argus,
Why not rename the copy of the file in system32 and copy the file over from the driver cache to the system32 folder?

I think that file was also included in an update ( dated ? ) KB890859.

Re: ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt (Home/SP2)

Hi Bob & Doc,
Thanks for your replies. Since my last post I have looked at the boot.ini file. I have not been able to edit the file since there are random freeze when in RC. A type command shows the following (one OS) boot.ini:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Micros oft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Obviously the first default line in boot loader should not be there. I tested to reboot the machine in Normal Mode and it showed a scheduled chkdsk, I let it run, after 15 minutes it came out OK, rebooted, and later froze at desktop. I know that either I have to edit the boot.ini or edit boot.ini AND replace ntoskrnl.exe. But since I have these random freezing I did the boot to Normal Mode just as a test.

Bob,
So there is a copy of the ntoskrnl.exe in the drivers folder or dllcache folder?

Doc,
Yes I found the pages at computerhope (even think I have a bookmark on the other machine), anyhow they mention for example the bootcfg /rebuild command etc. and info. about switches etc. Simple and good.

So I do not know if the first line (after timeout) did all this, or it was some corrupted ntoskrnl, but that line will be removed (and if I find a good copy of the ntoskrnl I can replace it), but for that to work I need at least some minute without a freeze. Oh, and yes during the evening reboot tango I got one: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, STOP: 0x0A, and one: STOP: 0x7F. Sigh, one step closer to an expensive upgrade.

Any comments are always appreciated.

Hi Doc and Bob,
A quick update from Sunday morning. Thanks for your reply Doc; I posted one reply earlier, that time to Bob. After three attempts to start the RC (it froze after log on), I finally got one chance to look closer. Amazingly (yes, because I know what I saw yesterday and wrote down) today there is only one default line in boot loader:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Micros oft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Thanks to Bob, my mind started working and I went to: C:windowsDriver Cachei386, yep, there was a correct version of the ntoskrnl.exe. I renamed the copy in system32 to ntoskrnl.old and copied the file from i386 to system32.

After a last check at the boot.ini I rebooted the haunted machine, it went OK. So far almost an hour up and running. I don't know if this had anything to do with a corrupt ntoskrnl or if hardware problem can generate this, probably can.

Doc,
Thanks, I almost took you up on that offer. After some consideration, I opted for coffee.

BTW, what happened to the Coffee Cup smilie?

Argus,

Hopefully you are back in business again.

Out of curiousity, I checked my boot.ini file to compare with your post and it was close to what you had but also had the timeout option "commented" out? Not sure why. I must have made that change a while back but don't remember when or why?

Argus,
I forgot to answer the question in the middle of your post.

I found ntoskrnl.exe in three places on my machine.

C:Windowssystem32
C:Windowsdriver cacheI386
C:Windows$hf_mig$KB890859SP2QFE

Bob,
A drop of Bushmill's would brighten up that sunday morning cuppa too !!

Now that you mention it, the CoffeCup smilie has gone MIA. Don't tell Skitter !! That was her special request.

Re: ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt (Home/SP2)

A drop or two would help a lot, especially since my isn't even in the water yet.
Transmission problem and bad starboard diesel injector has it high and dry!

Standing on the corner with my tin cup hasn't raised enough cash yet to pay for the fix. Might have to take up windsurfing in the meantime!

Bob,
Yes, back in business, at least no complaints about the ntoskrnl. BUT, as an example, this morning it took three reboots to get the machine running, I maybe will post some follow up questions in my hardware thread about PC upgrade.

Yep, one sometimes do changes and later don't remember either when or why, On a single OS machine and without Recovery Console as a boot menu option I can not see anything gained with a short timeout or comment out. Maybe a ";" will shorten boot time with 1-2 seconds, but that is nothing compared to the longer boot time due to SP2, AV, firewalls et al.

I found ntoskrnl.exe in three places on my machine.

Yep, in Normal Mode it

Claude has kindly replenished the Lounge's coffee supply, so now <!t>[coffeetime]<!/t> works again if you type it in directly: . The Smilies panel still needs to be repaired.
