Acrobat 7 Reader and Acrobat 6 full product

I have Acrobat 5 full product.
    I installed Acrobat 7 Reader.

Default for PDF now opens in Acrobat Reader, that's OK,

But only if I can add Acrobat 5 to the Open With menu, so I can choose twixt
    the two.
What's the right way to so this?

As a last resort, I might be able to use the Send To menu, but Open With is
    the right way.

    Pilgrim,

I have been in similar position. The latest version of Acrobat Reader for maximum ability to read PDF files created by others. An earlier version of Adobe software because that is what I had a license for, and an update license can be quite expensive.

AR7 with full AA5 is not a good idea at all Howard as I have had problems with this in the past.

Can you clarify to me why you want this? Is it because you are recieving documents in an old AA5 format. Different versions can upset the Distilling aspect of the Adobe installation and the settings in IE and the macro package in Office XP and upwards...just a word of warning as I have seen PC's go belly up with this, but I don't know why I am telling you this because you are bound to argue....but listen to my words of warning It is not a good idea to mix and match different versions of Adobe YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

    Stuart,

Okay...... "Senior Moment" hits once again. What "license"??? Adobe Acrobat READER has always been free for the taking, as far as I know. I can understand someone wanting AR 5 because it isn't so bloated and or they have no need for the extra features that have been added in its development. But again, why BOTH versions on the same machine? You can slap me if you like to help get my motor started. <img src=/S/rofl.gif border=0 alt=rofl width=15 height=15>

Re: Acrobat 7 Reader and Acrobat 6 full product

THe lower version is the full Acrobat product.
The higher version is just the Reader.

    Don't slap yourself too hard.

Actually the title was suppose dto be "Acrobat 7 Reader and Acrobat 5 Full product".
It was known that Acrobat 6 Reader would not always work alongside Acrobat 5 fullproduct.
I am in the midst of doing temporary installs on a drive that I will be restoring to its original state, so what the heck, I
decide dto try Acrobat 7 Reader alongside Acrobat 5 full product.

I've added Acrobat 5 to th eSEnd To menu, but I'd ruther have it in the OpenWithList.

I am quite aware of the issues, and have warned others many times.

I'm toying around on a temporary OS that will be restored to its previous state.
I'll likely chicken out and not keep Acrobat 7 Reader.

Excellent, I am glad you are aware of the issues.

By default the different versions will be installed in different folders so they will not interact too dangerously. I was not aware that you were knowledgeable about the various problems with Adobe, I don't read everybodies messages however much I would love to.

I have a liking for the Send To option you mention and direct it to the AR7 Reader to ensure that the correct exe is being called. The issues will when you click on hyperlinks say in Word, other pdf's that have been distilled and of course your Browser where I suggest that you right hand mouse click and save to the hard disk.

I had a terrible time with Adobe a while back as the macro's kept crashing Word due to the different installation folders conflicted....something I could have rectified but it was a Corporate build PC...good luck

Re: Acrobat 7 Reader and Acrobat 6 full product

Way back, when Version 6 was released, a bunch of folkes, including moi, asked in comp.pdf.text, whether Reader 6 could co-exist with 5 Full.

The response was a resounding "perhaps not", as a number of folkes described problems confirmed by others.
I got a similar response when I later asked about 7 Reader, but the answer was less certain.

Since I am presently playing with ShadowProtect, and will be fully restoring the drive to its prior state when finished, I thought that I'd play with 7 Reader as well.

Since 7 Reader is installed AFTER 5 Full, and I dare not install in the reverse order, it seems that 7 Reader prevents 5 Full from being included in the Open With List. I did explicitly change the registry, but it had no effect. Maybe I had to reboot to have an effect, but I did not do that.

So I added 5 Full to the Send To menu.

This seems to work, as the default should be to open with Reader.

I gave up on using Acrobat via Office many years ago.

I rarely edit PDF files, other than IRS forms.
Usually, I just want to read the critters, or I print to the Distiller printer and, so far, that seems to work.

Recently, iIve been seeing more PDF created by some companies (or just certain groups within companies) that do not seem to understand that they should be creating the lowest level PDF possible, as not everyone with an earlier Acrobat FULL may be able to install REader 7, and there are those using other readers/pdf products with similar problems. raising this issue at some companies falls on deaf/clueless ears.

Interestingly, I'm not sure that Adobe offers earlier version Readers for download.

I find OpenExpert quite useful, and you could try Oldversion.com for previous versions of Acrobat Reader.

Re: Acrobat 7 Reader and Acrobat 6 full product

When I rebooted this AM to the OS on which Reader 7 was installed, I was surprise dto find that when I clicked 0on a PDF file, I got a message tgat Acrobat.exe could not be found.

When I checked the file association, it stated that I had changed the association.
Restore made Reader 7 the default, but looking at th eopn, print and printo commands, they were all still pointing to Acrobat 5.

I did notice a Persistant key associated witf PDF, whatever that means.

Seems that Reader 7 somehow prevents Acrobat 5 by being included in the OPen With list or even changing the file association.
So, it seems only workaround, without disecting registry, is to use SEnd To for Acrobat 5, allowing REader 7 to be the default, which is likely best anway, as I read more than I create PDF.

Re: Acrobat 7 Reader and Acrobat 6 full product

All I can say is Egad!

As I stated before, on my multiboot system, I installed Acrobat Reader 7 in an OS that has full Acrobat 5.
I was not able to include Acrobat 5 in the Open With menu, so I had to ad a shortcut to Send To.

Well, today, I bit the bullet and decided to install Acrobat Reader 7 in my main OS.
Since I KNEW that I would not be able to have Acrobat 5 in the Open With menu, before doing the install,
I added a shortcut to Acrobat 5 in the SEnd To menu.

You can guess what I'm about to say, n'est-ce pas?

This time, both Acrobat 5 and Acrobat 7 are in the Open With menu, as would be desired and expected.
So, I have now deleted Acrobat 5 from the Send to menu.

    Go figger!
