    Which application are you using? In Word and Excel, you can use

    Application.ScreenUpdating = False

    at the beginning of your code, and

    Application.ScreenUpdating = True

    at the end. It's not perfect, though.

    Thanks - works well. Can I use this instruction in 'This Workbook' to apply to all applications? If so, what is the generalised command for all applications/

    You have to turn it off and on in each macro - you don't want screen updating to remain off when macro execution has finished. There is no general option that says "always turn off screen updating temporarily while executing a macro".

    FWIW, this morning I followed a post by Geoff Whitfield (<post:=6,824>post 6,824</post:>).
    I inserted the =false and =true (two lines of code) and reduced a client's application from 2m37s to 19s.
    A saving of 87% execution time on a 2GHz 2GB laptop.

    Turning off screen updating can indeed make a huge difference in execution time.
