Log On to Windows (XP SP2)

Now I've done it! I was trying to bypass the windows logon (so that I didn't have to click a username and enter a password every time) and now I can't do anything other than start in Safe Mode. I keep getting a dialogue that asks for the Administrator (User name) & Password. I was able to dowload TweakUI and reset the password, but I still can't get in! I checked the MS website and it suggests I reinstall windows. I hope that isn't the only answer!

Have you tried entering the old user name and password ??? Is this dialog preventing you from getting into Windows in Safe Mode ??

There used to be just "Dad" (me) and "Guest". I had turned Guest off. I don't know where the username "Administrator" came from but I tried putting in "Dad" and my old password but that does not work either.

I am, however, able to boot the machine into Safe Mode.

Your subject says (XP SP2). Since your post is in the Windows XP forum the XP-part is obvious, more interesting in questions like yours is what version you are running: Home, Professional, Media Center etc.

On what account do you log on in Safe Mode? Dad?

How do you "reset the password" with Tweak UI? You can use Tweak UI to bypass the logon dialog and log on automatically.

Log on in Safe Mode and go to Start>Control Panel>User Accounts>Change the way users log on and off and check Use the Welcome screen and then click Apply and close the Control Panel and reboot. You should get the Welcome screen back.

Re: Log On to Windows (XP SP2)

Argus, Doc: I am using XP Home. I thought I had deleted the account "Dad" and when I was logging on in Safe Mode I was using "Administrator" (I don't even know where that came from). Yes, I used Tweak UI to bypass the logon dialog and log on automatically but I still got a logon dialogue. I tried logging on using "Dad" and that account's password, but no luck. I tried again using Dad without a password and it worked! (Sort of) Now I get a Logon Message that says "The system could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case." When I click "OK", I now get the "To begin, click your user name" screen with "Dad" as the user name. When I click "Dad" I get the "welcome" screen and the computer starts normally from this point.

So, now, my problem is how do I get rid of the "Logon Message" ("The system could not log you on...etc)?

I think you need to go back to Control Panel>User Accounts and reset the password in there.

(Edited by CAC on 18-Jul-06 15:46. Doofus user didn't read message properly!)
OK. in TweakUI I went to Logon ->Autologon and made sure there was a checkmark beside "Log on automatically at system startup" and for the User Name I entered "Dad" and clicked on the Set Password button. In the Set Autologon Password dialogue I typed and confirmed a password and then "OK", "Apply" & "OK" again. Next I clicked on the "start" button then "Turn Off Computer" and "Restart". As the computer is restarting I get the "Windows is starting up" screen briefly and then the Logon Messasge "The system could not log you on. ...etc". Then I get the "To begin, click your user name" screen. The only user name is Dad and when I click on that I get the "welcome" screen and the computer appears to start normally.

So, now, all I want to do is get rid of the "The system could not log you on. ...etc." message.

OOPS! I completely misread your last message and for some reason confused TweakUI with Control Panel -> User Accounts. I re-set the password as you suggested and all appears fine now. I'm so sorry for the confusion and I hope it won't prevent you from bailing me out the next time I screw up!

Re: Log On to Windows (XP SP2)

I'm trying to get you to take TweakUI out of the equation and get the system working correctly before setting it up to start the way you are asking. Windows can do that without the help of TweakUI.

If you want to do this, retrace your steps in TweakUI and undo the changes you made and then go to Start>Control Panel>User Accounts>Change the way users log on and off and make sure it is set to Use the Welcome screen. Back out and reboot. You should now have to sign in at the Welcome screen and should be able to do so as Dad and use the original password (if you changed it back in TweakUI). Sign in and go back to Control Panel and uncheck the box next to Change the way users log on and off, click apply and then rebootthe system. It should go right to your desktop.

No problem. That's an honest mistake that anyone could make. It's better taht you caught it yourself. I always seem to learn more from my own mistakes than I do from other people's instructions. Or maybe it's just that the lessons last a little longer if you learn them yourself.

Always glad to help someone willing to learn.
