Unwanted Desktop Overlay (XP Home)

I'm trying to help an elderly gentlemen who states that just before his desktop comes up the screen fills with a porno image advertising Rosebud Digital DVD, and it stays there overlaying his desktop. He has no idea how he got it or how to get rid of it. He claims to have run AdAware and he has an antivirus program running.

Any suggestions are most welcome.

Try downloading SpywareBlaster and install and update the program. It's and might block that porn junk from getting instructions from home. If not, there are some other programs, although not free, that should be able to remove that for you. Spy Sweeper is my personal choice here. You can get a scan at their website. HTH

Lavasoft Ad-Aware Personal is also and recommended. It has slightly different database than SpyBot - the best and highly recommended program, which can "immunize" your computer from known threats.

Sorry, my fault.
I had to remind to update Ad-Aware from "Check for updates" link or manually download definitions from
http://updates.ls-servers.com/public/defs.zip and unzip it to C:Program FilesLavasoftAd-Aware folder.

The same reminder is true for all anti-malware programs: update definitions regularly!
