Helvetica font?

Does anybody know of a download source for free PC Helvetica font? I don't even know if there are free versions of the plain old font face available - I've only been able to find free "variations" on the web.

    thanks

    Re: Helvetica font?

Helvetica is a copyrighted font owned by LinoType. As far as I know, there are no free legal versions. But there are many lookalikes, such as Download free font - Coolvetica (and Arial, of course).

Thanks Hans. Unfortunately not a match. Specifically, I can't find a close match for the @ character, shown in the middle line below. I think it's Helvetica (normal) but now not so sure.

The middle one is certainly not Helvetica. See sample below.

My -the middle one is close to Verdana with the '@' in Italics.

Have you seen the Identifont site which leads you through a series of questions and answers about a font's appearance to enable you to identify it?

It looks very close to "Helvetica Neue Extended" to me, the letters seem compressed vertically like that font.

    Ian,

Thanks for the link to "Identifont". Now please excuse me for going a bit but I had always dreamed of finding a similar product that would 1) install on your HDD and 2) be able to identify not only typed fonts but fonts used in images. Yeh, a hopeless dreamer am I.

Thanks Ian. I have tried this, or similar, but the results are broad, and I can't seem to nail it.

    Re: Helvetica font?

It's awful close John. I don't think it's the one though - the "a" is noticably different.

Thanks Stuart. I'll take a closer look at that. I'm hoping to get th info from the producer of the original graphic... some time this decade.

I stumbled on WhatTheFont : MyFonts on my own quest. It allows you to upload a graphic. I didn't have much luck with it, but you might.

    Re: Helvetica font?

Hey thanks! The third try produced a successful result. I've added the site to my Favorites and it just might come in handy.

    Re: Helvetica font?

I seem to have accumulated some very strange fonts recently such as "Parry Hotter" and "X-Files". A catalog of how they appear in your text is available for your downloading pleasure. I think they will work on a computer that doesn't have these fonts, based on a test on my work PC.

(Zurich is close until you get to the "a")

    Re: Helvetica font?

Sorry for the late reply Jefferson. The Word macro runs OK, but only shows my installed fonts. The PDF comes up very nicely though, thanks. In the end, I found out it was Helvetica (although I still can't se the resemblance!) and we found it easier to replace the lot with Arial.
