Missing Security Fixes (Win XP SP1)

I used Belarc Advisor and It said at the top of the page : Microsoft Security Updates Up-to-date and there was a green check mark. When I scrolled down to the list of installed Hotfixes, under SP3 almost all of the updates had the word: Reinstall. I tried to reinstall and after completing the procedure, re-booted. I opened Belarc again. Nothing had changed, the same Reinstall was there, almost all on the list had that word.

I've installed some of them three times with the same results. Has anyone else found this to be the case? How should I handle this problem?
I'll appreciate some help on this one.

Are these Windows or Office hotfixes? What do Windows or Microsoft or Office Update say? I don't know what Belarc uses to detect hotfixes but Windows/Microsoft/Office Update should be considered the final arbiter.

Do these fixes REQUIRE that SP2 be installed?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Missing Security Fixes (Win XP SP1)

Gloria,
I have not been using Belarc for a long time. Many of its features can I find in other programs. When (if) I check if I have a patch installed the correct way (if I should feel the need for it), I follow the instructions given by Microsoft in their bulletin for that specific patch.

I do not see why I should trust a third party in this case. Patches are something between Microsoft and me , anyhow, and now I speculate, say that I use a non-English Windows version and have the correct patches, a poorly written English program maybe will not find everything.

How to check:
If a patch is supposed to update, for example, the file tcpip.sys, then one can check the properties for file version to see if one has the latest. I know it can be really boring to check every file, but it can be used in special cases.

It is common that the bulletins mention the registry key: "HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftUpdatesWindows XP" and in this case "SP3" to look for installed updates.

Many people go looking at Control panel Add remove programs to see what is installed. Not everything shows up there.

The easiest way should be, as Joe mentioned, to use Microsoft Update to check if any updates are needed. However, I suppose one can still have problem with incorrect file versions, since I do not think the MU/WU/OU do that extreme deep scan of the machine. Once an update is installed, Windows takes over and uses its "Windows File Protection" (WFP) to control that no crucial file is replaced. Even if MU/WU does take a little time to scan, I cannot think it checks every file.

And yes, I think Dave can be correct also (even I'm not thinking of your SP1 version), a third party tool can have problem with if an update is needed for SP1 or SP2, Home or Professional, I do not say that Belarc Advisor have these problems, but separate tool can have problems.

It seems like they have had problem with some update to Belarc Advisor.
Belarc Advisor Security Defs Update - 2006.7.11.3

So do not take extreme actions just to satisfy that little tool .

Re: Belarc Advisor problems - if you do an update now you get 2006.7.11.5, two versions on from the 'problem' one...

John,
Thanks for the information, but I think it is more suited for Gloria. I do not use Belarc Advisor, do not have it installed, my last downloaded copy is 2-3 years old if I still have it.

Re: Missing Security Fixes (Win XP SP1)

They are Windows XP updates and are in the column under SP3. I ran Microsoft Updates again and it reported that there were no critical updates available at this time. On a hunch I ran "Review your Update History" - all the updates reported to need re-installing were on the list of updates that failed. Isin't strange that Microsoft Update would think they were installed and ok?

I contacted, through a Web form, Microsoft Help & Support. They downloaded something that looked at my computer and stated a Microsoft Techinal Support agent would contact me via email with a report about my problem.within 24 hours.

Belarc Advisior was correct.

No, they all listed Windows XP Home and Professional as programs affected. I can post a list of the failed updates if you think it would help.

I installed Belarc Advisor Security Definitions Update - it didn't help.

Try Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer - if it reports no threats, everything is OK with hotfixes.

Re: Missing Security Fixes (Win XP SP1)

Ran Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0. There are no missing Updates for Windows nor Office XP, therefore I'll ignore Belarc Advisor's missing securtity notices.

Thank you for reminding me about Baseline.
