Unable to open Outlook email (2000)

One of our managers received a CD with several e-mail files included. He attempted to open these messages and consistently received an "unable to read item" error message. However, when I open the same files in Outlook 2003 I have no problems. How do I go about converting these files for use in Outlook 2000? I ran a search on this topic but didn't have any luck. Can someone assist?

    Thanks!

What is the file format? .MSG would be the Outlook default for individual messages. I wonder whether it changed when the format of PST files changed in Outlook 2003? If they are PST files then you can check in 2003 whether they are in the 97-2002 format or the new format.

They don't seem to be .pst files. The type is listed in Explorer as "Outlook Item".

Sounds like .MSG. In Windows Explorer or My Computer, you can use Tools>Folder Options..., View tab to turn on the display of file extensions.

I checked and they are .msg files. So, how do I convert these to Outlook 2000 format (.pst?).

    Thanks for your help.

I don't know how many you have, but you could try individually opening and saving them into a pre-2003 format PST. Or perhaps a mass "drag and drop" will work?
