Log on (XP Pro (SP2))

I've just taken over a computer set up by someone else. The user accounts are configured so that you have to click on the relevant picture to log on. My past machine (also running XP) was set up so that it just booted straight into Windows without this need to log on - how can I change the new one so it also does this? And still have full administrator rights?

    Thanks for any pointers

    Nick

Probably the most frequently mentioned way is to download and install TweakUI for XP from here: Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP

Besides automating logon, there are a number of other helpful adjustments contained in the program. There are also a number of other useful "toys" at the link.

If all you want to do is have the machine boot to the desktop, open any of the accounts with administrator priviledges (if you don't know which ones have Admin Priviledges, you can first check in the same place you will be making the change. Go to Start>Control Panel>User Accounts and see which accounts are listed as Administrator accounts. Select one and then make your changes. From here you can change the way users log on and off by checking or unchecking the "Use Welcome screen" option or change the account's name or make any account an Administrator or demote any account from an Admin to a Limited account. Check it out and post back if you have any further questions.

BTW - Al's suggestion about TweakUI is also a good one. The program is and was written by MS developers so it works and plays well with the Windows OS and does many useful things.

Thanks very much Al, had completely forgotten that Tweak UI was useful for this sort of thing.

Thanks Doc, I had had a look at User Account but thought it was only an either/or situation - use welcome screen or full logon procedure - not eliminate the logon altogether. Will try again.

Thanks once again Al, haven't tried it for auto logon Tweak UI clearly works a treat. Would seem much the easiest way of achieving the objective.

    Al

I've used this tweak in the past successfully. After a multitude of software/ Office/ Windows updates though, something seems to uncheck the Autologon box, on random occasions. Have you heard of such a gremlin?

Sorry Alan, I've not heard of it. I don't personally use the Autologon feature I'm afraid. Let's see if anyone else chimes in here.

Re: Log on (XP Pro (SP2))

It appears that one of the updates created a new user account (SSL De######???) which does not appear as a choice on the welcome screen. Deleting this account fixes the problem, but ( ... after the event) how would I recreate this account if I might need it?

One of WHAT updates? My machine is up to date with XP patches and I don't have any spurious user accounts. I don't have any idea what's happened in your case.

Re: Log on (XP Pro (SP2))

It may well be associated with VS.NET or the updated .NET framework. I think there is a "de######" accounts group, with a particular level of access, maybe associated with ASP.NET, but I don't know the details. That being the case, I probably wouldn't need it anyhow.
