Tried to install it - after complete uninstall of previous version, using JVTools to really get rid of all references. However I keep on getting the error messages below. What to do?

Just so you know I'm awake and "reading" - I don't know the answer to your question yet. I don't know why you decided to un-install 'cause that shouldn't be necessary (or desirable) in the case of ZA. If you do that, even successfully, you have to "re-train" the product every time you update, re-setup you zones and so on. I don't know if using JVTools to remove is causing the problem. While we're both looking at Zone Labs web pages, let's see if another Lounger jumps in with a suggestion. Hang in there.

The first post I came across in the ZA forum is this one: http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board/m...essage.id=53618.

Wow, there's a lot of stuff there, so you ought to read it carefully before you take any action. I'm going back now to look for some more "removal" threads...

Edited to add: Also found this: http://nh2.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/Prod_1/...stallNonNT.html

Is there any easy way to see what has been changed in this version? Any list of bug fixes, modifications, or whatever?

I find it quite annoying when release notes are not readily available. How can one tell how necessary it is to upgrade?

If there is a quick link to any release notes, any chance of posting it?

On a product like this I never bother, but here's the place I usually read. It's not up to date for .731 yet however:

Re: Zone Alarm 6.5.731.000

Leif,
Looking for info. about the free version, ZoneAlarm? Yep, I agree, finding release notes on the Zone Labs site is not so easy. I guess there always is like this with companies selling their products; lots of other info. On freeware sites, you often quickly can find a change log.

Anyhow, from Zone Labs I click customer support (at left, Resources) then I click FREE ZoneAlarm under Product Specific Support. There is link to release history

And here we have it, not. I first learned about the new 6.5.731 version some days ago (File Hippo?) and at the Zone Labs forum. As usual, directly after a release, they don't get the links correct. As I am writing this, in the release history they mention 6.5.722 as the latest version with downloads, info and everything.

I don't know if this is what you mean, that you have looked here but not found anything, or didn't find the release history at all. I don't know so much about the latest free version, but Pro users are screaming for fixes, apparently some fixes were easier to do within free version. I have read that the locking of the HOST file was a mistake, and that it would be corrected in this version.

If you are running Win2k or XP make sure that you are logged on as a user with administrative privileges. Have you emptied your Temp folder? Maybe you installation file was corrupted. Try downloading ZA again.

Big Al, Joe,

Of course I am administrator. I did the first set of "instructions" with no luck. I'll try the second one later tonight. Failing that I'll try to install a 6.1 version as my problems really started with the 6.5 versions. I'll keep you informed.

Re: Zone Alarm 6.5.731.000

Hi Argus,

Thanks, but Nope - the Pro version, which I am trialling at the moment. (I spent a few minutes looking around, and a search for "release" brings up an Access Denied page!)
I'm used to release notes being automatically and readily available for the software I use, so I can judge whether it is applicable or necessary, and if there anything I need to be aware of that has changed. Would you download an XP update if MS didn't say why it was needed or what had changed? I don't know about you, but the "Tiger Wood PGA Tour won't be able to connect over LAN issue" being fixed would hardly stir me into action.

You could argue that if I had waited a few days I would have got this version anyway, but I have better things to do than download and install every update that comes out, particularly if I install it across the company.
And I'm not really inclined to be a blind beta tester for their updates!

Re: Zone Alarm 6.5.731.000

Hello Leif,
OK, Pro. I'm completely with you, I agree. You don't have to ask me if I would d/l an XP update if MS didn't say why or what. I seem to be one of the few who d/l my updates via bulletins / MS download, so I do take a little time to read about the updates.

I'm running ZA 6.1.737, so I'm not jumping on the releases as fast as they come either. As far as I have seen there are no updates to the Pro version between the two latest updates, as example see this thread at Zone Labs User Forum.

In addition, it is a long time (in computer world) since I tried the Pro version, so I don't know how it works now. But if you are going back to the free version when the trial expires, you may be interested to read this. People have reported that the free ZA continued to apply the settings from ZA Pro, but when trial expired, there was no way to change them. Apparently, one should remember to turn off the Pro features. I can't say I had that problem when I did a trial.

I have not had any problems with ZA during all the years. During the last two years since last OS install I have updated ZA with no prior uninstall. But, if one looks at the user forum, it does not look encouraging. After all the questions and grumble posts, one finds a question "What is the last trouble-free version?" [sic].

Re: Zone Alarm 6.5.731.000

I have the ZA Security Suite, and had a probably-related but different experience. ZoneAlarm itself gave a pop-up warning that something was trying to access it or change it, and I queried it to learn the source. It may have just been the source of the program they were using, but all of the details were filled in on the second page that it was Microsoft software (but I think a number of years old - the date was there as well).

I said NO to the installation, and immediately got the Blue Screen. After I restarted I got the Major Error message and let it send an error report to Microsoft.

I might add a note on the matter of re-training the program. I think the program is smarter than it used to be, and almost everything (or everything by default) has an automatic setting, presumably based on the feedback from users who let the thing see what settings they were using, much as error reports might refine Windows. That should at least reduce the time the program takes to learn what you personally want.

I should add that I haven't checked the ZoneAlarm forum myself yet, but I plan to do so.

...I think the program is smarter than it used to be...

That may very well be, but not always. You might refer to my <post:=588,371>post 588,371</post:> in the software forum for an example. In that case ZA Free had, after recreating its two files, completely forgotten my modifications to zones, didn't recognize my home LAN and had lost all of the allowed software that I'd "approved" so far. I realize my case was some type of accidental corruption, but we always need to be careful.

By the way, as of this morning that release notes page has still NOT been updated.
