    page # problem (Word 03 SP2)

I have a document I wish to distribute by Email. It is protected against untracked changes. However when ever it is printed it tracks a change in the number of pages in the document. (See the attached screen capture.) I have "Update fields" and "Update links" turned off in the Tools/options/print panel. The same thing occurs when I convert it to a PDF file.
Is there any way to prevent this?

    Re: page # problem (Word 03 SP2)

I just discovered that if I protect the document against any changes the page numbers print "page 1 of 1", "page 2 of 2", page 3 of 3"....
So that is not a solution.

I don't think you can turn off field updating in headers and footers. On the other hand, the field result isn't changing, so it's odd that it's marked as a change. Is it just an ordinary {NUMPAGES} field?

To avoid this problem you can do one of two things:
    1. Turn off revision tracking before printing and then turn it on again before you forget.
    2. Accept the revisions to any fields and ensure that the Tools > Options > Print setting to automatically update fields before printing is turned OFF.

No it is the {SECTIONPAGES} field. This document has several sections which I wish to appear and number as seperate documents.

I agree it is strange that it shows as a change when there isn't any, Just as strange, is why does the unchanged {SECTIONPAGES} show as a change when the unchanged {PAGE} does not?

Of course I can do those things. But I am distributing this to a 33 other firms. I would like it to look very professional when they print it out. As I said in my original post, the "Updatefields" is turned off in the Print pannel of Tools/Options

Do you really need track changes to be ON when you send out the document?

    Re: page # problem (Word 03 SP2)

It is not absolutely neccessary, but it is highly desirable. This document is a Request for Proposals (RFP). We are a public agency. The vendors will respond to our RFP by editing in their responses and noting exceptions to the terms and conditions. Track changes helps me to discriminate between our lanquage and thiers. It also helps me to make sure there have not been any other less obvious modifications to our lanquage. An alternative approach would be to compare and merge each response with the original RFP. But since some responses use dramatically different formats that can be a real problem.
BTW: I tried protecting the document against any changes. The problem there is it prints each page as "page 1 of 1", "page 2 of 2", "page 3 of 3" etc.
I can distribute it as a PDF file.

I don't know if you can prevent the problems with changed page numbers if you keep track changes turned on.

About the "page n of n" problem, see the workarounds in Page X of Y displays or prints as Page 1 of 1, Page 2 of 2 etc on the Word MVP site.

NOPE: That results in all pages in the section being numbered "1 of 27, 1 of 27, 1of 27,..."

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by jscher2000 on 28-Jul-06 15:37. )</P>This reminds me of a thread where someone wished that we could mark text as "Do Not Track Changes." However, I do not believe that wish has been fulfilled.

Do you expect the number of pages to change after you send the document? If not, and you prefer to retain the field rather than unlink it, you could try locking the field.

Added: I see now that was referred to above. However, you would only want to lock the {SECTIONPAGES} field, not the {PAGE} field.

    <img src=/S/bravo.gif border=0 alt=bravo width=16 height=30> Thanks konopca and jscher. I guess I was so frustrated I didn't think through konopca suggestion. <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15> Thanks jscher for pointing out that it was just the {SECTIONPAGES} field that should be locked. <img src=/S/hailpraise.gif border=0 alt=hailpraise width=27 height=22> That did work.

<img src=/S/ranton.gif border=0 alt=ranton width=66 height=37> NOW at the risk of being called a sadomasochisticnecrophilpic (one who beats a dead horse). Doesn't it seem absurd that it should take this much time and brain power to deal with what seems to be such a basic requirement of word processing? Or, Is this really such a complex problem? When I started working on this it seemed like such a simple idea. <img src=/S/rantoff.gif border=0 alt=rantoff width=66 height=37>
