    usb printer in ME

<img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15> my dad has ME on IBM netvista and HP deskjet 930c. I downloaded a usb printer driver from HP (we lost the disk!) but the PC insists it cannot find the driver and insists (despite all control panel attempts to change route) the printer should be attached to LPT1 parallel otherwise the driver will not install saying it can't find the printer - does anyone have an idea what to do before my hair goes, or do i buy a ten dollar parallel cable and give in!!! To recap windows knows the printer is there but can't talk to it, the printer is AOK, but won't say hi via the usb port, the driver can't find it, and ME can't find the driver on C:

Just off the top of my head...but doesn't HP have a 'live chat' online or an 1-800# to call about stuff like this? There should be some kind of help on the HP website/printers, etc.

    Re: usb printer in ME

The downloaded driver, was it an executable (i.e. in .exe form) ? Was it compressed and when expanded, have an install progream ?

Some of my HP Printers for W98SE required I expand the compressed file and "Re-install" the device driver.

If the latter is the case, Open Device Manager, Select the printer and select "Reinstall Driver". When prompted, select the location (Drive:subdirectory) of expanded files. Click Finish and ME should install the new device driver.

I don't have that model printer but I'm wondering if you might have had to remove the USB cable connection prior to running the driver install file. You could try starting all over again by removing/uninstalling the printer completely, either by an HP Start Menu item or Control Panel. If you do, when you start the re-install, please note that HP does say on the page for downloading this driver that the USB cable should be unplugged. I believe that the installer will tell you when to plug the cable in.
