Antivirus Software

Suggestions for the best antivirus software? Have to either renew NAV which was really difficult w/my IBM last year, or new product. Wondered if there were any thoughts on this?

    Thanks as always.

    Best,
    br

    Re: Antivirus Software

"Best" is a subjective term, of course! It also depends somewhat on how "adventurous" is your web-surfing, and what proportion of emails you get is spam and/or virus-infected.

Personally, I use the ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 2006 for software firewall, antivirus and antispam (although my ISP filters out all spam before I ever see it - whoopee!). Amazon (UK) had it cheaper than anywhere. I changed from Norton Internet Security 2004 (or was it 2005?) only because I fancied a change - I didn't get the oft-reported slowdowns because one of the components was using a huge proportion of the CPU on occasion.

On my other machine I have ZoneAlarm firewall and AVG Free antivirus. The latter seems to do a pretty good job antivirus-wise and updates itself consistently, automatically and frequently. Both products frequently try to push you towards purchasing their paid-for equivalents, though.

So the questions I would be asking myself are:

Do I want a "security suite" or individual components?
Do I want a free or a paid-for antivirus solution?
Have I got installed all the other useful security hardware (firewall?) and software (firewall, antispam, anti-browser-hijacking, anti-assorted-malware), with both real-time and on-demand scanning?[/list]Others will suggest other things, no doubt; the above is my !

    Re: Antivirus Software

One of the links that Hans pointed you to contains a post from me saying that I've been a TrendMicro user for several years now. That IS true and my license runs until next February. I use only the AV part of the software and the free Zone Alarm for a firewall. Now, I have a new (additional) machine and rather than buy an additional license, I decided to try the free Avast! antivirus software for the new machine. I've been running for about 3-4 months now without incident. Both products update their definitions regularly and automatically and do not hog my system resources.
