I am getting a constant 'hang' in internet explore

I continue to get a hang message when I go into IE and I can not tell why I am getting it. I have student ebooks on my computer that I can not lose otherwise I would do a full reinstall of my system but sometimes this does not help. Can anyone tell me what to do and how to fix this hang?

I'm not sure what you mean by a "hang message." Is it the dialog saying "Internet Explorer needs to Close" with the option to send the error to Microsoft? Sometimes these problems are related to plug-ins, such as the one that the open PDF files, or media players. If you can find a pattern, that will help. Otherwise, our IE board has suggestions for repairing your installation of Internet Explorer itself.

Hi, I think I also sent you a message because I noticed you are an attorney, I am a paralegal student and I can not have my computer crashing with legal documents on it, this is why I am posting this. The message you talked about is the one I am getting, but there is not really a pattern I can go into any site, especially if I have IE open too many times at once because I am searching other sites, but one thing is that when I go into LexisNexis it "hangs" more than usual. Any suggestions?

I hardly ever use LexisNexis (we have a flat rate agreement for WESTLAW). Sites with a sophisticated interface often present issues with ActiveX and pop-ups. If you haven't already added the lexisnexis.com/lexis-nexis.com domain to your Trusted Sites list and your popup blocker exceptions, that probably would help. And of course they have all-the-time phone support. Perhaps there is something special about the site?

If IE is customized, you could consider removing any toolbars or other add-ins you can live without. (Also, any spyware on your computer, in case it isn't set up to clean itself.)

Finally, you could try Firefox or Opera, IT policies permitting, and see whether you find them more stable.

Re: I am getting a constant 'hang' in internet exp

Thanks for the information but as I said the problem is not only with Lexis, it is with other sites too, I have not yet had problems when I use Westlaw. Because i am a student I have access to both of these. One thing I noticed about two or three months ago is that I found a folder that was put on my desktop that has no name and it has nothing in it. I tried many times to throw it away and it will not allow me to, this might be one of my problems but I can not figure out how the folder got there and why it is there. Any thoughts? As far as the Lexis site I will add it to my trusted sites but I think it is one that is already there, so I am not sure this is the problem.

Have you tried to rename the noname folder to anything, like X.
Then try to delete it?

Re: I am getting a constant 'hang' in internet exp

Thanks for the reply back, but I tried naming the folder, I tried just deleting it, I tried moving it, I have pretty much tried everything and nothing works. This is what it is saying when I try to delete it: "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk." It says a similar thing when I try renaming it, or giving it a name. The only thing I can do is put something in it, that is the only thing it would accept.

Hi Wendy

Have you checked the folder's "Properties"? (Right click on the folder and select properties.)
The "General" and "Sharing" tabs might provide some helpful information.

Have a Great day!!!

You can go for a Repair Reinstall of XP which will not affect your ebooks files.

Go to :REINSTALL XP

Method 2 is probably the most common way to do it.

Re: I am getting a constant 'hang' in internet exp

The error I am getting is a signature error in IE. This is what it is saying:
szAppName:iexplore.exe asAppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 asModName: hungapp
szModVer: 0.0.0.0 offset:00000000

When I went to the MS site it does say that I can still lose data if I do a Repair Reinstall of XP so I can not chance losing my ebooks because they are ones that can only be downloaded one time or I will have to pay for them to get them a second time.

But thanks for the suggestions

This might apply IF you have XP preinstalled as part of a package by the manufacturer.

Is this the case?

If not, there is no reason that a Repair reinstall will affect data that you installed.

Re: I am getting a constant 'hang' in internet exp

Wendy,
As a follow up, I googled "modname: hungapp" ( you may want to do the same ) and got a number of hits.

Very prominent was the name McAfee Anti virus, in some of these hits.
Do you have McAfee AV installed?

Also mentioned was a solution that mentioned re-registering some DLLs.
-----------------------------------------------------
szAppName : IEXPLORE.EXE szAppVer : 6.0.2900.2180 szModName : hungapp

If you're getting this hungapp message from IE Internet Explorer on certain websites,
try the following (reregistering your DLLs) - it worked for me and got rid of the
problem!

Run each of the following from Start -> Run:

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
----------------------------------------------------

Very easy to try these and no harm done. Just go to Start>Run and type in each item one at a time and hit enter.

Re: I am getting a constant 'hang' in internet exp

Yes, it is pre installed, however I have had to wipe it out many times because my children have messed with it by going into web sites that either have viruses or too much ad ware or spy ware on them and it caused problems with other programs on my computer. I do have McAfee's on my computer, it comes with all free updates from the cable company I use because I use the cable modem. I will have to do the same search you did and see how to try and correct the problem. It is so annoying when something good is on your computer to keep things in order and it ends up messing it up more than helping. I would have never known to look in this direction.

Thanks for the info. I will try and see what I find by doing a search the way you did

The Google search does show a lot of problems and some solutions for some people.

Have you tried to reregister the DLLs shown in my last post?
They should have nothing to do with preinstalled OSs. Try it.

Forgive me if I am stating something that is painfully obvious to you, but can you not just back up your e-books to external media (floppy, CD, network drive, etc.), rebuild your system, and copy them back?
