pc performing poorly - really slow (windows XP)

Hello

My home WinXP is highly spec'ed than your average home pc and is only a year and half old. Lately when Im working, the symptom is when you click on an exe eg Word, or Explorer - any application theres a considerable pause and time delay when you double click to when the application launches. when you select different windows to work in - again theres a noticeable time lag. Or just performing basic standard tasks in Word or Excel - again theres a noticeable time delay. I do alot of work on the internet if that helps troubleshooting. eg blogging, setting up websites.

It it so painful

I've tried the following suggestions but had no luck:
continue to clean out the Windows Prefetch folder.
performed a disk cleanup and defragment.

Any ideas?
many thanks diana

Right-click an empty part of the task bar.
Select Task Manager from the popup menu.
Activate the Processes tab.
Click twice on the CPU tab to sort descending on CPU usage.
See if there is a particular process that uses a large percentage of the CPU during the actions you mention.

Also: do you have and use up-to-date anti-virus and anti-spyware software?

I would update them immediately, then run full scans!

No updates in a year and a half !!!!!

I'd almost bet that your problem is spyware/malware or a virus. Take a look at this thread to get a couple of the right tools and the tutorials to run them. SpywareBlaster is a good program for protecting you in the background and only requires weekly updates and no scans. The others require the weekly updates (at least) and that you scan your system at least once a week to keep your system up to date and protected. On today's internet, it's better safe than sorry. HTH
