    Advanced Appearances (XP-SP2)

Why (all of a suuden, I believe ) am I unable to enter a 3-digit code for custom colors in Advanced Appearance attributes?

Two digits show, with the tird partially blocked, and I can erase one digit, but if I try to re-entera the third, or set up a new color, it beeps and won't let me.

    What the heck is this?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

Does this persist if you restart your PC?

    Hans:

Yes, it does. The theme I am using I imported, and all appears OK, but as I try to change anything...

I tried switching the appearance theme, but that did nothing to help.

Can you post a screenshot of the dialog (max. 640 by 480 pixels)?

Here's the "color picking part" for a window background.

Have you modified the dpi setting in the dialog that appears if you go to the Settings tab of the Display Properties control panel and click Advanced?

    Hans:

No I've never adjusted that setting... it's at 96 dpi.

I'd wait a bit to see if someone else has a suggestion. Otherwise, I'd think it's time for a repair install of Windows.

I don't think I would re-install for something like this, but I've tried and tried and can't duplicate what you're seeing. Can you click your mouse in FRONT of the first character and hit the delete key to remove one or more of the numbers in a box? I think I would try selecting some other scheme (theme?) or any other changes in "standard" that I could make to see if somewhere along the line you can pop it back into shape. How about, for example, go to the taskbar properties and change your Start Menu's radio button from "Start Menu" to "Classic" or vice versa, just to see if making some kind of system change will clear it up. It's got to be a trivial setting somewhere that you or a theme, or some piece of software has caused.

I can dig that. But it's there even in safe mode, and even when I revert to a standard theme. So I don't know...

    Re: Advanced Appearances (XP-SP2)

If the problem is very recent (as distinguished from you only recently becoming aware of it) and involves one or more Registry settings (which I'm not saying it necessarily does), it may be that a System Restore would clear things up -- back to a recent restore point that's before the problem happened but later than any recent software updates or installations you may have performed.

Please note: I myself have almost no experience using System Restore. If you don't either, you may want to wait for at least one Lounge XP guru to second my suggestion before you try it. On the other hand, my understanding is that System Restore is supposed to be a pretty safe thing to try because it's completely reversible (or so I've read).

You could be right... I may give that a try...

    Re: Advanced Appearances (XP-SP2)

Just to close out this issue:

I ran a repair install last night, and the issue with the color codes resolved itself.

So it must have been some corrupt file (in explorer?) that was causing the issue.

    Thanks to all.
