    unlock protected project (xl97/xl2000)

I have a password protected workbook which I need to look at the code. I have the password but am not getting prompted to enter it. I did this in March and remember checking the 'lock project for viewing' box and set a password. I guess my error was checking the 'lock' box since now I read in the Help that this is the reason I'm not prompted for a password. Is there a way to unlock it? I guess I didn't know the implications of 'lock' before. I hope locking a project isn't a one-way deal as I have to have this code ASAP.

WHEW!! I figured it out. When I opened this workbook in xl97 and went to the editor, it didn't prompt for a password. I then opened it in xl2000 and it DID prompt me for a password. So now I'm in the code as needed. Why didn't xl97 prompt me and what's the point of setting 'lock' if it doesn't prompt you?

A locked project with a password in xl2000 cannot be unlocked in xl97. However, locking a project in xl97 can still be unlocked in xl2000. Going back is not always a good idea, that applies to many things in life as well, ....

Yikes, thanks for telling me that! Sounds like a very bad backward compatibility issue. I have a project that must be equally usable in xl97 and xl2000 so I now know to protect it in xl2000 before shipping it out. After this problem, I don't see the point of the 'lock' feature since it's independent of entering a password (I can have it password protected with or w/o lock enabled). I'll avoid it from now on.
