    Chicago style dissertation (Word 2003)

Hi - have had a teacher who is ready to have her dissertation sent to the publisher ask me to help her figure out how to have the page number of the first page of each of six chapters of her 267-page dissertation appear in the center of the page, while all of the other page numbers must appear on the right-hand side of the page.

I can't figure it out in the short time-frame she needs - I'm just trying to help her out while I keep up with my own work.

I know probably everyone out there knows an easy fix - help, please.

Each of the six chapters should be a separate section of the document. You create sections by selecting Insert | Break..,. then selecting one of the section breaks (probably next page or odd page).

    Select File | Page Setup...
    Activate the Layout tab.
Tick the check box Different first page.
Make sure that Apply to reads "Entire document".
    Click OK.

It is now possible to create a different header and/or footer for the first page of each section.

That much I knew - the problem is making the page number on the first page of each Chapter centered, while the subsequent pages in each Chapter must have their page numbers aligned right . . .

    Help!

If you select 'Different first page', you can set up the header or footer for the first page differently from that for subsequent pages. If you create a new section for each chapter, the first page of each chapter will have a different header or footer from subsequent pages of that chapter. See the attached dummy document.

Thanks for being so patient with me - again.

If this teacher I'm helping (partially through you) gets her PhD - you will have helped. Go home early and have a great weekend.
