    little space on hard drive

We have a Dell laptop. A few weeks ago, there were about 450 mgs of space on the hard drive; now there are 50 mgs. No new programs were installed. The only new files were Word documents. The Temp folder is cleaned out periodically. Any ideas? Are there hidden locations to look for? Thank you very much.

The restore process may be eating up the disk.
What size is the drive to start with?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: little space on hard drive

Today, a Dell technician instructed me to run msconfig and make sure that "StateMgr" was checked. This action restored about 4 and 1/2 gigs to the desktop and almost 1 and 1/2 gigs to the laptop!! The results are evident. Do you know what the State Manager is for?
    Thank you very much.

STATEMGE.EXE is part of the System Restore process. What its exact funtion and activities are, who knows for certain but the developers. There's information floating about on how to disable System Restore, but I've found that it's a good tool if you're using ME - you can roll back your PC to a known good state with it. You may want to reduce the amount of space System Restore is allowed to use, because that space is not available for anything else.
