Change in Download behavior (IE 6.0 sp2)

A few weeks ago, IE started behaving strangely when I'd do a download. Previously, if there was a link on a site to a file for download, I'd just click on the link and a pop-up window would appear and eventually I'd be offered a chance to specify where I wanted the file to go on my drive. Recently however, the download starts immediately, and the file is transfered to a directory under "Temporary Internet Files". If I'm lucky, Windows Explorer pops-up with this location, and I can move it to where I want.

Any idea why this would start happening? Is there a setting someplace I may have inadvertently changed?

You have to set this for each file type:

    Start Windows Explorer.
    Select Tools | Folder Options
    Activate the File Types tab
Scroll to and select the extension you want to change (zip, exe etc.)
Click Advanced... (Windows 2000 and XP) or Edit... (earlier)
Tick the Confirm Open After Download check box.
    Click OK.
Repeat for other file types if necessary.

The "Confirm after download" is already checked!

    Try the following:
    - Select Start | Run...
    - Type regedit and press Enter or click OK.
    - Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftInternet ExplorerRestrictions
    - If this key doesn't exist, create it.
    - If there is a value in the right hand pane named AlwaysPromptWhenDownload, set its value to 1.
    - If it doesn't exist, create it as a DWORD value and set it to 1.

If you'd rather not mess with the registry, or if it doesn't work, you can right-click file links and select "Save Target As..." from the popup menu as a workaround.

    Hans,

Thanks! The registry hack worked. Of course, I still don't know why the behavior changed in the first place. Probably one of those things that Microsoft deemed to be a preferred method, so everyone has to use it. Sort of like when you mother feels cold, everyone must put on a sweater!
