    Registration / Activation (XP (SP2))

    Hi

I am about to sell my laptop and buy myself a desktop PC. My laptop has Windows XP installed which has been registered in my name. Is this going to cause any problems for me when I sell it? I can't remember which details I provided when I did register but In those days I pretty much gave everything they asked for. I would like to remove this information and allow the buyer to register their own details. Is this possible? If it is not, what would you recommend I do?

Let's see if someone else has any ideas to add, but I think the prudent thing to do would be to contact Microsoft Support and see what they tell you to do. Obviously you could go hacking around in the registry to change user information but it would be much cleaner to get help from the "mother ship."

    Big AL offers excellent advice <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Microsoft DOES allow the transfer of the software to a new user.

Check out Is it legal for me to sell software that I have bought and used?. This for for Windows 2000 server but applies to all MS OS.

You can also check out Microsoft's Stay Legal FAQ's for more information.

As a general rule, you can transfer the OS to another user but they have to accept EULA. You have to transfer all written material, software, and EULA's to the new "owner".

    Good Luck !

BTB - Here is a sample copy of the XP Home EULA - Read Paragraph 13.

A copy has been cut and pasted below:

    13. SOFTWARE TRANSFER. Internal. You may move the Software to a different Workstation Computer. After the transfer, you must completely remove the Software from the former Workstation Computer. Transfer to Third Party. The initial user of the Software may make a one-time permanent transfer of this EULA and Software to another end user, provided the initial user retains no copies of the Software. This transfer must include all of the Software (including all component parts, the media and printed materials, any upgrades, this EULA, and, if applicable, the Certificate of Authenticity). The transfer may not be an indirect transfer, such as a consignment. Prior to the transfer, the end user receiving the Software must agree to all the EULA terms.

    HTH !

Thanks again for the advice guys. Now I know that I can do this I'm happy. Are their any other things you think I may need to bear in mind when selling a computer?

Simply put - Sanitize the hard drive to ensure all of YOUR data is off. There are untilies that over write each place on the disk multiple times - barring that, format the hard disk a couple of times.

Re: Registration / Activation (XP (SP2))

Thanks for the EULA excerpt. It brings to mind a question I have: I have a Dell laptop that is out of warranty and has, for all practical purposes, died. I received a Windows XP Pro disk with the laptop when I bought it. The disk is labelled Windows XP Reinstallation disk, otherwise it has the Dell labeling and logo. I'm wondering if this copy of XP can be installed on another PC that I'd like to put together...not a Dell. From the EULA I would think that I can. However, I know that sometimes companies like Dell have things setup so that the software they provide can ONLY be put on a Dell.

Any thoughts on this one would really be appreciated.

    Thanks.

NO, it can not be installed on another PC. The major PC vendors (not just Dell) all have contracts with MS that allow them to supply the OS for a much cheaper price than you can get. The OS is tied to the motherboard of the PC with which it was shipped.

Re: Registration / Activation (XP (SP2))

    Joe is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT !

    I am <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15>

When I posted the excerpt, I should have also put a note stating that the EULA was based on an INDEPENDANT copy of the XP Pro and/or if you were to provide the Dell computer and software (providing the computer was working) as a complete package.

Good questions Bob and Great answer Joe !
