Printing a list of the contents of a directory (XP)

    Hi All,
This might not be possible, but I need to create a printable index of the contents of a directory.
Is this easily achievable? If so, how?
    Thanks.

Re: Printing a list of the contents of a directory

An old "DOS" trick might help.

Open DOS Shell (AKA Command window) by Clicking "OPEN", "Run", enter "CMD.EXE" )without the quotes), press "Enter"

Goto the directory you want by typing:

cd crogram files <- In this example, C Drive, subdirectory "program files"

    Type following command:
    dir *.* /s > prn

A listing of the directory, /s includes subdirectories. and directs the output to your printer.
You can substitue a file name (ex listing.txt) in lieu of prn if you want to save or modify the printout.

I would normally recommend a DOS solution, but that has already been done!

Why not look at (sorry, check out!) Karen's Directory Printer, frequently recommended here?

A popular solution is to add a "Print directory" command to the right-click menu for folders in Explorer.

    Here are Microsoft's instructions.

Thanks all for your very informative responses. Much appreciated. I have found that the DOS option worked very well for me.
I did download and try to install the Karen's Print Directory Software, but the software kept freezing on my system during installation and couldn't be installed. Very frustrating, but them's the breaks.
Arh DOS. Sometimes the best solutions are oldest.
Thanks again to those who responded.

Did you try to contact Karen? I've read she is usually pretty responsive.,
