    end program - W (xp)

Occasionally I will have a user whose computer will not shut down. They will get the message "End program - W" If they hit End Now, to close this, the computer will close. Any idea what this is or why it it keeping the computer from shutting down? It is sometimes proceeded by mapi32.exe not closing properly. thanks

Does the user use Outlook? And if do, is Word set as the mail editor in Outlook?

Did you check autorun programs (msconfig | startup)? Any references to W ?
What kind of errors shows in Event Viewer during shutdown?

As a workaround, create a shortcut with command:

    shutdown -s -f -t 0

The user has Outlook 2000 but doesn't have Word set as the editor.

That means my guess was not correct. See kaplinb's reply.

I checked start up--no references to anything "W". the only thing I saw in the event viewer was warnings that "the attempt to poweroff [computername] failed.
