    Folders as Read-Only (XP Pro)

All my folder attributes on my hard drive have somehow been changed to "read-only'. Individual files such as DOC or XLS have not been touched.

If I use Windows Explorer to reset the folder attribute ie uncheck "read-only" and then click on apply to folder, sub-folders and files; everything looks as if it is changing. When I go back to look at the attribute of the folder or folders it is back in "read-only".

I am in the process of running a virus scan but no virus has been detected so far.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? I can open files but not save them as the folders are "read-only". This must be one of those undisclosed features of XP. Thank you Mr. G.

You will find that ALL folders on a XP system are read only. That said there is nothing to stop you from copying, moving and even deleting them, unless it is a SYSTEM folder. It has been this way since day one of XP and was discussed by many beta testers before the release of the product.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Dave,

Unfortunately I can not save the file from the folder it was opened from or another folder or "save as" a different file name.

Re: Folders as Read-Only (XP Pro)

Are trying to save to the desktop folder or is that where the open file is located?

See attachment, as you can see the desktop folder is read only on my system, but I can save to it and open file that are located there.

Is this a personal or a company machine?

    Dave,

Chalk this one up to "sun spots". <img src=/S/cool.gif border=0 alt=cool width=15 height=15> It was a permissions issue. Somehow my permissions were removed so I could not write back; only read.

    No one know how/why it happened. <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45>

    Thanks for you help,
    John
