    Can not move/copy a file (Windows XP Professional

    Suddenly I find that I am unable to drag a file from the right pane in Windows Explorer to a folder in the left pane. I have tried right clicking and dragging and just dragging and I am unable to go from left side to right side.

    I use a Classic Start Menu and in its Properties is a tick-box to enable dragging and dropping. Take a look to see if yours has gotten accidently un-checked.

    Oops, I forgot to include: There is also one "fix" at Kelly's Korner on Line 233, right side: Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP

    Al, I could not find the tick-box in the properties section of the Start button (right clicked on Start button in Classic mode). I am still checking the registry as you suggested, but at first glance that seems OK. Not an expert here. I will backup my registry and report back.

    The following is the registry entry. It seems OK to this untrained eye. Still not able to Drag and Drop.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionExplorerStartMenuStartPanelEnableDragDrop]
    "Type"="checkbox"
    "Text"="@shell32.dll,-30475"
    "HKeyRoot"=dword:80000001
    "RegPath"="SoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionE xplorerAdvanced"
    "ValueName"="Start_EnableDragDrop"
    "CheckedValue"=dword:00000001
    "UncheckedValue"=dword:00000000
    "DefaultValue"=dword:00000001

    Jim,
    Try this command from Start, Run:

    regsvr32 ole32
    and
    regsvr32 /i shell32

    These are two separate commands, so you type in one at a time.

    Restart Windows.

    Re: Can not move/copy a file (Windows XP Professio

    It is a command-line tool which registers .dll files as command components in the registry.
    Hopefully the ones needed to repair your problem. It doesn't do any harm if these are already registered OK in the reg.

    See this MS article about REGSVR32

    Jim,
    Glad you fixed it! <img src=/S/thumbup.gif border=0 alt=thumbup width=15 height=15>
    This is a quite odd problem, as you probably found out during your searches and troubleshooting. When I looked at it, and waited for your reply to Bob, I found reports that some virus might have this effect; I looked at access permissions (MSKB), and I also found one report about the Escape key (mentioned almost at the end of this thread, 25 Jan 06). However, I found that so odd that I did not post it that time, sorry.

    I once had a stuck shift key, also caused (other) weird symptoms.
