Win98SE Updates

I know Microsoft has stopped coming out with new updates for Win98SE. What I would like to know is, are all the old updates still available From Microsoft? I have checked the Microsoft web site and could not find and info on it. My reason for asking is every five or six months I reformat this Win98SE PC and when I do that reformat I have to download and reinstall all the updates for Win98SE. If all the old updates are not available any more from Microsoft, is there a way of locating all the Win98SE updates on my PC and burn them onto a disc so that the next time I reformat I can reinstall them from that disc?

Re: Win98SE Updates

Apparently, updates are still available - see Microsoft Windows: End of support for Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows XP Service Pack 1
<hr>Existing support documents and content, however, will continue to be available through the Microsoft Support Product Solution Center Web site. This Web site will continue to host a wealth of previous How-to, Troubleshooting, and Configuration content for anyone who may need self-service.<hr>
Existing updates should still be avbailable through Windows Update.

Re: Win98SE Updates

Hans,

FYI - Although Microsoft has stated no new updates after 11 July 2006 will be provided, I have two machines with W98SE that received two automatic Critical Security Updates.

So ...

Microsoft is still providing "LIMITED ?!??!" security updates they think are noteworthy ?
I just let the computer continue checking for updates with the understanding that any update Microsoft allows me to have is a golden nugget to be appreciated <img src=/S/shocked.gif border=0 alt=shocked width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/innocent.gif border=0 alt=innocent width=20 height=20> ...

And plan to upgrade in near future (when computer <img src=/S/meltdown.gif border=0 alt=meltdown width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> <img src=/S/question.gif border=0 alt=question width=15 height=15>)

All the better if they still provide critical updates...

Totally agree - Just wish Microsoft would "Agree" - but eventually, we all have to upgrade sometime.

Thanks Scott. I like the idea of having the PC check for updates by itself. How would I set my PC up so that it will do the same?

Re: Win98SE Updates

I appologize in advance for the length of this post and the rather "Detailed" instructions. I cut and pasted most of this from an instruction I created along time ago for family members who needed .... <img src=/S/innocent.gif border=0 alt=innocent width=20 height=20> <img src=/S/whisper.gif border=0 alt=whisper width=29 height=17> (extensive coaching) .

The second appology, my method is not TOTALLY Automatic, it involves a human to click "Scan Now" after the update page has appeard. The procedure was created for family members so they would be "Forced" to run it every Sunday Morning before heading out for their cativities.

My way, basically you need two things:
1. <LI>Internet Shortcut on Desktop
<LI>Task Scheduler running in system Tray
Internet Shortcut on Desktop:

<UL><LI> Open Internet Explorer (IE) and goto Windows Update Page.
<LI> For Reference: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
<LI> Or, from IE Menu Bar, Click < Tools>,<Windows Update>
<LI> Position Cursor over IE Icon in Address bar, Drag and Drop to Desktop.
<LI> I rename the Internet Shortcut: Windows Update.
ALTERNATE METHOD
<UL><LI> Position cursor on blank area of Desktop.
<LI> Right Mouse Click (Popup Menu will appear).
<LI> Click < New>,<Shortcut>
<LI> Enter: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp in the Box under <Command line:>
<LI> Click <Next:> Button.
<LI> Enter <Windows Update> in the Box under <Select a name for the shortcut:>
<LI> Click <Finish:> Button.
Task Scheduler running in system Tray:
<UL><LI> Open Task Scheduler in system tray (Double Click Task Scheduler Icon).
<LI> Double Click <Add Scheduled Task> Icon.
<LI> Schedule Task Wizard Popup will apper.
<LI> Click <Next:> Button.
<LI> Click <Browse...> Button.
<LI> Program to Schedule Popup will apper.
<LI> Click <Look in:> window and select <Desktop>.
<LI> Find and select the <Windows Update> Internet Shortcut you created.
<File name:> Field should show "Windows Update.url" (or actual name of your shortcut)
<LI> Click <Open>
<LI> Select the Radio Button under <Perform this task:> (I usually select <Weekly>)
<LI> Click <Next:> Button.
<LI> Select options under ...
<Start time:> (I use 11:00 PM)
<Every (enter number box) weeks> (I use 1)
<LI> <Select the day(s) of the week below:> (I use Saturday)
<LI> Click <Next:> Button.
<LI> Click <Fish> Button.
In the above example, Windows Update will run every Saturday night at 11:00PM, or be waiting first thing Sunday Morning for the "Human" to click <Scan Now> button.

Once upon a time, I had a shareware utility that would ACTUALLY automatically get the updates, but it created trouble with my AntiVirus software allowing "Holes" in the firewall that could be exploited - thus the above procedure.

If this turned out to be something you already knew, <img src=/S/sorry.gif border=0 alt=sorry width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15>
