Alt Print Screen glitch (XP Pro SP2)

Client presses Alt Print Screen and does not get the "active window" print but the whole screen as if Print Screen was pressed. Looking for possible causes. At this point it is my understanding that this behavior is in all apps not just Office 2003 SP2 or one of the Office apps such as Word.

    I'll learn more on Monday.

    TIA,

    Jester

Does the Alt key work correctly on the client's PC? For example, can menus be activated in applications by pressing Alt+underlined letter, for example Alt+F to activate the File menu?

I have to verify that but I believe this user would have picked up on an issue with the Alt key as they are pretty savy. But, as Reagan said, "Trust but verify."

Thanks for reminding me of a possible solution that I was over looking.

If that's not the problem, also ask the client to reboot the PC (if that hasn't been done already) to rule out the possibility of a temporary glitch.

I know that is not an issue as this is a laptop that is not left out over night and is probably taken home regularly.

The alt key works so there is no issue with keyboard. The problem exists in all apps when client tests alt print screen. Machine is a laptop which has been rebooted several times since issue discovered.

    From here.....

try SHIFT+ALT+PRINTSCREEN - SHIFT+"meta keys" usually broadcast that keystroke to the "server" system.

Has the user tried either Alt key?

The only other suggestion I have is to use one of the many free screen capture utilities.

If you choose to go the third-party route, a good choice isHandySnap.

Re: Alt Print Screen glitch (XP Pro SP2)

I have no laptop to base this crazy idea on, but do you think this person could temporarily plug in an external keyboard to see if the problem still exists. The reason I'm wondering is that "sometimes" that old <big>Fn</big> key on a laptop can have strange impacts if...

Already done as they use a docking station with external keyboard so I had them do the reverse, and test the laptop keyboard.

It was a shot in the dark based on this line...

<hr> this is a laptop that is not left out over night and is probably taken home regularly<hr>
    </center>
I thought it might be a personal laptop (or corporate issued) that was connecting to a server at the office and that was the basis for my post.

Re: Alt Print Screen glitch (XP Pro SP2)

This is a networked laptop but it client does not use Cisco VPN or other remote connectivity software. I doubt they take the laptop home but just lock it up at night. The client was just doing screen prints and attempting to paste into word docs.

I have determined that XP SP2 was applied via corporate update process and the screen print function was lost in word. Deleting the Word data key repaired the screen print function but the issue of Alt Print Screen was introduced by the fix.

Re: Alt Print Screen glitch (XP Pro SP2)

My next guess would have been that the IT department had done something to disable the function. However, I can't see what the update to SP2 had to do with that. Unless they took the opportunity to do some other work on the network system.
