Wanted: app for visually scanning audio files

I'm trying out a recording application that does a terrific job of using my crummy little PC microphone to record sounds in my home while I'm away. The problem is, using regular MP3 players, I have to listen to hours of recording to determine if there are any unusual or loud noises. It would be so much easier to have some sort of application that visually represented the sound by displaying spikes on a horizontal line. I could load the hours of recording, spot the spikes very quickly and could then go to the event and determine its origin. Anyone run into something that can do this? (And I don't even know how I'd search for this with google.)

I haven't tried using it for what you are doing, so maybe it won't fit the bill, but take a look at Audacity ( ).

Ooooh, we may have a winner!

Thanks, that looks like it might do the job. I'm going to try it out later. Thanks!

Confession - all I ever used this for was to cut out side 2 from my CD rip of Tull's "Thick as a brick" - there's an obvious transition section from the vinyl album. You may find that working with MP3s is complex because you need to load the LAME encoder.
