    No Boot! (WXPHome SP 2)

Computer running well, then....would not boot up. It gets through POST and then quits with the announcement that "NTLDR IS MISSING Press any key to restart". NTLDR is in WINDOWS/I386. A mystery is that under DOS I386 doesn't appear as a folder, where I could stuff a fresh copy of HTLDR from the WINDOWS CD.
This problem appears before it will get to SAFE MODE.
I seem to remember finding a System Restore tucked away somewhere, available prior to launching WINDOWS.
    For now I'm just stuck.
    Enlightenment anyone?

The most common cause of the error "NTLDR is missing" is a non-bootable floppy disk inserted in the floppy drive.

System Restore can restore Windows Registry from the previous successful boot or from created restore point.

You can also use Automatic Restore function when booting from Windows XP Installation CD. Manually overwriting ntldr file may make system partition unbootable, use Windows Installation CD to restore Windows system files.

I believe kaplinb is probably correct. The only time it happened to me (mentioned somewhere in the Lounge) I had to restore from a TrueImage image backup for I don't use system restore. No amount of manual monkeying around or tweaking could solve the problem.

    ladimer,
NTLDR should also be in your root directory. ( C:ntldr )

Check this site on how to repair this problem: NTLDR

The gist of the repair for XP is:
    ------------------------------------
    Windows XP users

Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

    copy e:i386ntldr c:
    copy e:i386ntdetect.com c:

Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.
    --------------------------------------------
( e: being the CD drive. Change the drive letter to match your system )

Re: No Boot! (WXPHome SP 2)

Kudos to the WOPR warriors -- it worked!!
I just had a non-bootable OEM copy of WINDOWS. So, started the fix with a:, accessed the WINDOWS CD, and then (DOS) copied the two files you suggested.
Thank you for saving me from a fate worse than "fdisk".
    Andy
