DVD Autoplay (XPHome)

I have recently installed a Liteon DVD-Writer,Double layer player/writer for some reason the autoplay settings will not stick.

I opened My Computer, right clicked on the DVD, selected properties, selected the Autoplay tab and proceeded to set each setting from the drop down menu as appropriate.

Can anyone help?

Cheers

Re: DVD Autoplay (XPHome)

I've never been able to get the DVD player in my PC to auto-play consistently. I've set it the way I want numerous times, but it only works about 10% of the time. The rest of the time I get a prompt asking me what I want to do.

I recall a similar problem some time back, and downloaded from the MS site a small file called the Microsoft Autoplay Repair Wizard. AutoFix [V5.2.3790.67].
I have saved it on my PC and can send it to you if it is no longer available.

And if the repair tool that Hans is going to try doesn't do it, Kelly has a registry tweak at her site on Line #234, right side: Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP. I haven't looked inside the fix to see what it tweaks in the registry, so take a look first.

Thanks for the pointer - I'll try it out!

It is still available for download from Autoplay Repair Wizard.

Added: the download requires your Windows version to be validated.

The download from Kelly's Korner is not a registry tweak. It is identical to the download from Microsoft (AutoFix.exe).

I have just now tried it; the tool reported that there were no problems, but most DVDs still don't AutoPlay. (It's only a minor irritation, I can live with it.)

Re: DVD Autoplay (XPHome)

Thanks Hans, and sorry for the confusion. I never bothered to "hover" the name, which clearly does show autofix.exe as you said. You know what I did when I ASSuMEd that all Kelly's tweaks were .reg files, right? I'll have to be more careful. Sorry it didn't work. It's embarrassing that I've got a new (4 months) machine with my first ever combo DVD/CD burner and I've only played one DVD in the thing, an old rerun of All In The Family.

Do you mean you are prompted again for the appropriate action or that nothing happens? Are you running as an administrator? This article: CD-ROM May Not Run Automatically in Windows XP explains that your must be a 'Power User' (not avaiable in XPH) or and Administrator for autoplay to work.

Have you already checked out the KB articles from autoplay - Search The Knowledge Base?

Re: DVD Autoplay (XPHome)

I had encountered some (not all) of them, but none of the suggestions I tried have worked. I haven't contacted Microsoft for a special hotfix, since I don't consider the problem to be serious enough.

Just to take away any confusion: when I insert a DVD, the AutoPlay dialog will come up, so it's not a matter of not being able to play DVDs. The correct application is already selected in the list, so the only thing I have to do is click OK or press Enter. Checking the "Always do the selected action" check box is ignored.

Re: DVD Autoplay (XPHome)

Do the DVDs that fail contain mixed types of files (i.e. data, video, audio)? I think that I've seen XP end up being confused about what to do when I've had both audio and video files on the same CD.

Re: DVD Autoplay (XPHome)

I can understand that the dialog comes up for disks with mixed content. However, it also comes up for disks with single type content. The dialog for mixed content doesn't have an "Always do the selected action" check box, the dialog for single content type does. See Using and Configuring AutoPlay.

But it's inconsistent - about one time in ten, a DVD movie will start playing automatically...

You could try using Sysinternals Freeware - Regmon to see what is happening.

Re: DVD Autoplay (XPHome)

Dianne hi

Cheers for that. I have located and downloaded the file. Unfortunately I am at work and the machine is at home and I am off to Sydney for the weekend.

I will let you know Tuesday how I get on.

cheers

Re: DVD Autoplay (XPHome)

Joe,

I really appreciate your suggestions and your concern, but I've tried a lot of things over time, and I decided the problem isn't serious enough to merit spending more time on. Pressing Enter to start a DVD 100 times a year takes less than a minute of cumulative time...
