Maintaining Favorites Folder Structure (XP SP2)

Using Win 2000, one of our users was able to sort his saved "Favorites" in an order that made sense to him -- i.e., NOT in the defaulted alphabetical order. He then noticed that after upgrading to XP, his Favorites folder in IE did revert back to the defaulted alphabetical order. After which time, he started to re-order them to suit his needs. The few he resorted, again, reverted back to the default order the same day. Any fixes to keep custom-sorted "Favorites" to remain when upgrading to XP? Or any fixes to have them stick if they need to be resorted?

    Thanks!

I don't know if it's possible to preserve the sort order of Favorites when upgrading from Windows 2000 to Windows XP, but once the sort order has been modified in XP, it should be preserved. The sort order is stored in the registry, in the Order value in the key

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorerMenuOrderFavorites

If the sort order is lost, perhaps this value is corrupt. The user could try deleting the Order value (or even the entire Favorites key). It will automatically be created again.

The few he resorted, again, reverted back to the default order the same day.

Was the computer on continuously and the order was resorted (in other words, he didn't re-boot, log off, etc)? Was he using IE or Explorer to make the sort order ?

Hans <post#=593,191>post 593,191</post#> is correct on registry value. Once the change has been made in XP, it should stay there.

Once suggestion - change the sort order, IMMEDIATELY goto registry and Export the Tree path:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorerMenuOrderFavorites
into an external file with ".reg" (noting location of saved file). Close all applications, execute the ".reg" file by double clicking the file (this re-inputs the registry key back in the registry), and Shutdown the computer (forcing the settings to be saved.

NOTE:Shutdown the computer - NOT re-start. This ensures all settings are saved, memory flushed, etc, etc, etc.

Re-Boot the computer. If the settings have changed, it might be an admin issue where initial defaults are being loaded for the user everytime that user logs into XP. With the external ".reg" file he can always changethem back - but this would be a pain everytime IE is opened.
