    extract pictures (Word 2002)

I have a document that I created some time ago by inserting pictures (jpgs) from file.
In the meantime I have misplaced the original jpg files.
Is it possible to "extract" the pictures (or a passable copy of them) from the word document?

Save the document as a HTML file. Word will create a subfolder containing copies of all the images in the document.

    Or

Select a picture by clicking on it.
    Copy to the clipboard (Ctrl+C)
Start any graphics editor, for example Paint (included with Windows), or IrfanView.
    Paste the picture (Ctrl+V)
    Save as a .jpg file.

BTW, the resulting "recovered" jpg file doesn't seem to be degraded noticeably in terms of quality. Should this be the case?

It probably depends on the quality of the original images.
